Evening all,

Not often I venture into this section of the forums :p

The GF's got a 59 plate 1.6CR Sport TDI Ibiza, cracking little motor but tonight it has totally confused me. She came home, locked the car and came in the house, half an hour later she couldn't unlock the car with the fob.

She only has the one key, so I cannot do the usual syncing, and with VAGCOM it says that there are no stored keys, so I cannot seem to code it that way.

Does anyone have any suggestions without having to take it to the main stealers?

Cheers guys

Well I dont know about your specific case as yours died so quickly but at least on Skodas its a known issue that the key dies eventually even if the battery is ok the key won't work as the transmitter just does not work. Seat uses the same keys so could be the same issue.

Yup, but that requires a key in the ignition and one out to then sync, and we only have the one

Not according to my handbook.

Page 76
Synchronising of remote controlled key

CAR UNLOCKED - Press lock button on key - then lock car manually with the key within 1 minute.

CAR LOCKED - Press unlock button on key - then unlock car manually with the key within 1 minute.

Usual reason for lack of synchronisation is pressing the lock/unlock buttons a few times when outside the range of the car.

What do you mean with that? That you can reset your key by pressing the buttons? Havent heard of such problems or had one myself and I can assure that all my car keys buttons get pressed in my pocket without the car in range.

The key changes the code each time it unlocks the car ( to stop the old system of grabbing codes )

If you press the unlock button too many times when out of range the key and car can lose the synchronised hop to the next code.

That's why the book tells you how to re sync it.

Yeah and can operate the central locking from inside, when the Mrs gets back I will give it a try

OK - so the key IS still coded to the car - and the transponder in the key is being read by the loop around the ignition barrel. Otherwise the car would not start.

It is only the remote locking that has failed.

Try the re-sync first.

If that fails - try disconnecting the car battery for 10 mins.

After you re-connect the car battery - try the re-sync again

Ok cheers, the thing that worried me was that I was following the instructions on Ross tech that said that it showed how many keys were coded and that said 0

That was the OLD system

NOW you need to have a special code and an internet link directly to VW in order to code a new key.

The dealer plugs in the computer and opens up the key coding menu
the computer connects to VW central database
a current key is placed in the ignition and that key code is compared with the database
if the codes match - the operator is told to remove the good key and place a blank key in the ignition
the new key is then coded to the car and both key codes are recorded.
you can have 5 keys coded to the same car.

Sounds like a right ball ache, I'll try the battery and the other methods, if not we will have to take it in and she can buy a spare key

Ah, forgot about that. Thought I dont know how many codes it generates and syncs in advance as I must have pressed the buttons tens of times without the car in range as I have tight pockets and my wallet presses the buttons and I sometimes play with keys myself. Maybe I should stop doing that . Been lucky so far, or there is some backup that has saved my as from resyncing the keys.
