It is 100% fake.
It is an electronic sound generator that is situated under the bonnet below the right screen wiper.
I disabled it by VCDS because it sounds terrible.
Now I can hear the engine noise as it should sound and it is not bad at all.
Ok sorry I was thinking that the under bonnet device was like a sound generator or micraphone type device that fed the sound into the car through the speaker. Can it just be unplugged without showing any faults?

It will still log a fault code so make sure to plug it back in before doing any warranty work other wise the tech will end up cursing you after going down a rabbit hole chasing the fault to find you've unplugged it and it's unrelated to the issue you brought the vehicle in for.
But if you wish to unplug it it's a fairly simple process
Remove rubber trim around the scuttle panel, remove the scuttle panel 4x clips I believe
The control unit is located on the drivers side near the top mount follow the wiring to a small sensor about midway along the bulk head and unplug the sensor (make sure to tape the sensor up to prevent any water ingress into the loom)
It will nog generate a fault btw.
But when you have someone with VCDS in your vincinity it is easier and quicker to turn the volume there to -0-, no hasseling under the bonnet needed.
I also disabled start-stop by VCDS so the annoying things are switched off here.
Disconnected mine toda, at low speeds it didn't bother me too much but it's just annoying at motorway speeds. Only takes 5 minutes and you don't need to take the wipers off. Once you've removed the 5 fixings for the scuttle it lifts up far enough to get your hands in. The sound box can be released from the cradle it sits in to make it even easier to unplug. The car sounds much better now!
