Hi

Got in the car this evening after parking up Friday and the dash told me check coolant. Have a look and level is approx 10mm BELOW minium.

Confused as to why??? Anyone else had this?

Not even a year old and no sign of a leak.

I've had two Mk5 Golf's over nearly 9 years previously and never needed coolant between coolant changes.

So for now I've topped up with de-ionised water to minium (all of 90ml !!!) until I can add in coolant to match the ratio %.

It's a fairly common trait with the Leon and other VAG cars which share the same engines. There's a few threads on here covering the issue. The consensus is that they aren't bled properly in the factory and the trapped air eventually makes its way to the expansion bottle.

More reassuring at least, they are a sealed system after all. My first VAG engine of this type. (Euro 4 PDs before)

Not sure about mixing coolants, I know some aren't compatible, I just used deionise water when mine did the same thing, with a view to putting the correct stuff in later when I could get hold of it. Needless to say I haven't got round to it yet so thanks for the reminder!

My car was 4 months old when I got a warning sign saying coolant low, seems to be common, went to vw bought 2 G13 bottles (only needed around a cupful to top it up so have a spare bottle not opened  ) and got deionised water in halfords, levels has stayed same since. Wouldn't worry about it.

I've had the light come on - topped up (as it was JUST below the marker) all seemed fine - few days later no heat coming out of the vents - Seat have looked at the car, and it needs a whole new heater matrix plus water bottle. car is freezing!!!!

Noticed mine was low when car was 6 weeks old. Dealer topped it up and pressure tested.

I had this on my car too, noticed it was low after the first 2k miles. Topped it up myself and its been fine since.

If you look at the layout of the coolant system and the fact that there is a charge air cooler with its own pump etc. its not surprising that it doesn't get fully bled on the production line.

Mines about that level now, no warnings at the moment and had since end of September.

I'm another one who has recently had a coolant warning. 64 plate 2.0tdi FR 150. I topped it up with G13 and will see what happens.

I probably had say 3mm of the metal sensor prongs/legs submerged.
Assuming that does the level.

On my Audi it's a known issue that these prongs 'rust' due to the condensation in winter, giving lots of low warning errors. Wiping the prongs with a flat screwdriver fixes it for another couple of years.

Not saying it's the same on the Leon, but worth mentioning.

Never had a problem (in any car) topping up small amount with tap water, obviously not diluting the anti-freeze too much.
