Well the saga of the Leon I was getting on Motability took yet another twist. I drove a 5 door and it had a huge blind spot over my right shoulder. I told the dealer that I wouldn't be taking a 5 door for that reason and said I wanted either the original ST or an SC. They informed me that the ST would take a further 12 weeks to get and that there were no SC's available and none would be built until the end of the year.

So the order has now been cancelled and I will in the next 3 weeks be the proud owner of a MK7 VW Golf Match Edition in Tungsten Silver Metallic

Not sure what the issue is I've waited for new cars as long as I can remember if you want what you want and its not in stock you wait for it to be built!

Sign of healthy business rather than having it stood in some port breathing in salt air for weeks on end.

You did not wanted to wait for a new car to be build, so you chose some other that nobody else wanted?

I think the back story is: He wanted a 5dr, but ordered an ST because the lead times were longer on the 5dr, then SEAT ordered and shipped a 5dr by mistake, and now he's realised the 5dr wouldn't have been suitable in the first place.

Close but not quite.....I ordered an ST and Seat ordered and shipped a 5 door which I tried on Friday last week before delivery was due on Monday. Having driven it I knew that the reason for wanting an ST or at a push an SC was valid the better over the shoulder visibility. Facing the realization that an ST would be another 12 weeks in a hire car and an SC wasn't an option I looked at a Golf on Sunday and the visibility was much much better. I ordered on the spot and as it was main stock only had to wait 4 weeks roughly. The final clincher for me was the spec was better than the Leon and I didn't have to compromise on colour.

The issue was the fact that they ordered the wrong car to start with and then told me another 12 weeks

I had a Golf Match as a courtesy car recently. Decent spec, virtually identical to the Passat inside, seemed to be a symphony of grey though. Two tone grey seats, grey paint, grey driving experience... Sorry, nodded off.. Not sure about rear view, as I spend most of my time going forward and I like to see where I'm going not where I've been. In any case, there are 'mirrors' (useful) and a rear 'window' helpfully cleared by a wiper fitted to most cars now ( hint: If there is no rear window it could be a 'van') and most models have parking sensors , so why worry?
Any ways, enjoy your new motor, you'll be off to join the Golf forum now, just do it quietly as a lot of them might be asleep...

I'm confused, the B post & C post on the 5 door and the ST are in the same place so how is visibility different?
On the SC the B post is further back as the door is longer so visibility may be better, the down side is the length of the door for getting in or out, assuming LeonSTWales has a blue badge this should not be a problem in a disabled bay, but could cause access/egress problems in a standard bay

I found that thinner B pillar and extra glass helped and you are right about the blue badge and doors on the SC but I thought it was a chance that wasn't safety related where as not being able to check my blind spot when merging or pulling out was a chance not worth taking

Yeah I totally agree with this.

The ST is much easier to see out of 'over the shoulder'. The 5dr has a huge blind spot where the rear pillars are, because they make up so much of the car at that point, while the ST has about a foot of extra glass and a better shaped window, so the pillar is much less of an issue. If you actually look at the 5dr rear corners you'll see that very little of that section is glass. The ST benefits in this respect simply due to the shape of the rearmost side window.

I tend to rely on the mirror with a quick glance over my right shoulder through the big 'window' immediately to my right side is useful enough to check for other road users before pulling out , so to speak. Try driving a van for a while and you'll soon learn to cope with a restricted view. Its all subjective really though. I find the Cupra easier to see out of all round than the Passat, the head rests are too bloody big. And talking of blind spots, ever driven a Mk2? That windscreen pillar can hide all sorts...

My mx5 couldn't really be any smaller, and that's almost impossible to see out of at the back unless the roof is down. Can't say I'm bothered...

Agree with Kazand too, the mk2 was significantly worse for visibility. Whose idea was it to park the wipers up there? Bloody stupid idea that was.

I ordered a FR SC Titanium at the end of July. As far as I am aware it should be delivered by the middle of October. Dealer didn't mention anything about them not being built until the end of the year!
