LCR Heated Recaro seats

So over the last couple of years I have been gradually updating the car with items it should have had from factory. This time though I have been turning the front seats of the LCR into heated LCR Recaro seats.

A while back I started looking into what I would need to do to turn it into Factory spec heated setup and whilst I wanted to purchase all new items unfortunately my bank balance and budget said otherwise plus they don’t make the seats any more. So in a desperate but semi proper way I found out that the MK4 Golf Recaros are essentially the same things. So I got onto the forum and eBay and started looking.

First up were the heated seats. I spent months looking for a set of heated Recaro seats from MK4 golf. A set came up over Christmas and due to the time of year didn’t have the cash flow to purchase them. I was gutted but kept on looking. Sets came up for non-heated ones later in the year but every time I found some, money was not. So I stopped looking for a couple of months whilst I moved house and got some money behind me. Whilst waiting for Recaro’s to come available I sourced on eBay the loom from a German supplier.

There is a company in the UK that sells the looms and priced very similar. Other options are purchasing the one from SEAT/VW which would have been even more. Some people have said the mk4 golf loom can be used but my understanding was that the connectors are different due to the switches on the mk4 golf. Next up was the heated seat switches. So I sourced some from a guy on ebay that sold them cheaper than from SERE or TPS or dealers. These were brand new genuine switches.

Whilst on the bay I sourced a replacement heated rear window switch as it goes to the other side. I could have just turned it upside down but it would have bugged me till I swapped it. I looked for a replacement airbag switch as that swaps over too but couldn’t find one and didn’t want to pay at the time over £35 for a new one so did turn it upside down.
After getting my funds back on track I went looking for some heated seats. I still hadn’t found mk4 Golf heated recaro’s so decided to source some standard heated seats from the golf. Sets came up and good money was asked for them, a couple of months went by when I found a set of 3dr heated seats on the bay going for not a lot. Well I won them and picked them up 2 days later and got them back home.

The seats needed a good clean so I got to work on the fronts. A couple of weeks later I had a few days off and rang my mate up to see if I could pop down to his garage use his tools to start putting in the switches and loom. He agreed so I got down early one morning.
I labelled the loom up prior so I knew where the pins would locate. There are several guides on ukmkiv and vwvortex sites so they gave me a better idea of what I was doing. I took my time pulled the dash apart and side panels.

Once the loom was roughly in place I disconnected the battery and started placing the wiring loom into place then plugged it up to the fuse box and put the switches in.

I tested the seats I had bought and hey presto they worked! I was in business, so my worry that I had bought duffer cheap seats went away.

So now I had the heated seats but they weren’t the real mccoys. I had wanted a set of Recaro’s but hadn’t found a set that I could get. So in a moment of craziness I decided to I would buy a set of LCR Recaro’s and turn them into heated versions, I mean how hard could it be right? The search was on.

more info and photos to come tomorrow :)

Good stuff, having done this retro fit on a couple of previously owned mk3's and one mk4 Golf it's inevitable that I eventually do the same in my Leon although I'm currently toying with the idea of putting heated pads into some Toledo V5 half leather seats.

It'd be good to know where you sourced the switches and loom exactly as I know they're not exactly common parts for these.

One thing that is kinda irritating me though is the thought of losing the cup holder as the Leon is already crap in this department as it is!

Over the past year I had kept an eye on prices of SEAT Recaros and the price was high for a set of seats. Yeah I could go and buy a set of mk4 recaro’s but for the purist in me they would never fill the void and want of a proper set.
After much hunting I found a set selling for a price I was happy to pay so headed off to Newcastle and popped into see family on the way down in Yorkshire just so the misses didn’t think I was completely nuts driving for 5hrs up and 5hrs back.
Now I had my SEAT Recaro seats and got busy with looking at how to get the heater parts from one to the other. I removed the mk4 heated seats and put in my standard LCR seats.

I found several guides on the net showing me how to get the mk4 seats covers off and struggled for some time getting sore thumbs and shouting lots untill all was ready to get the driver’s seat done. I then contacted my local upholster and got him strip the mk4 heater elements out and sew them in to the LCR Recaro’s. Two weeks later I had a working heated Recaro driver’s seat. I got busy and swapped the standard seat over and tested it. It all worked great.

Ah life was good but after 2 days I was not happy with the results of the driver’s seat. Whilst the guy did a great job and got rid of the tear on the drivers bolster the stitching was not factory in look. I decided to stick with it as it was over winter last year and decided I would re-stitch the seat myself. Over the winter months I took apart the passenger mk4 golf seat and re-stitched them all back up and put them back together myself as when i asked the upholstery guy to sew the elements into the drivers Recaro seat I had not asked him to sew the mk4 cover back up.:blink:

In the spring I sold the mk4 seats and got started on putting together the heater elements into the passenger side.

I got the switches and divider from user: fastparts1 and the loom from car4style.de all on eBay.
The switches are not available from that user currently but if you put look on ebay.de you can find them all. Put in Seat Leon Toledo 1M Sitzheizung Schalter rechts Sitzheizungsschalter
and you will get a page listing most items but only on ebay.de
If you put the part numbers on eBay uk for the heater switches it will list the intenational sellers selling them. ie 1M1963564 or 1M1963563.

Yeah the cup holder issue is a pain but as the missus said to me, get a long straw and a sealed container and be the kid you are.

Ok thanks for the info, I must admit I did enjoy the challenge of sourcing parts on German and Spanish eBay.
My old mk3 Golf was filled with non UK and rare parts gathered from across Europe.

I've found the switches, divider and airbag off panel but I'm struggling to find the loom or that seller you mention.

My fault it's car4style.de! note the exclamation mark. Or put in leon harness on eBay, based in germany, you will see the connector plugs in the pic are purple an black.

continued

It took a long time to sew by hand but the result from doing the mk4’s had given me a good load of experience and if I made a mistake I could undo the stitching and start again. Eventually a got the passenger side stitched in place on the covers. Whilst putting back together the drivers base cover I noticed the foam had pulled up on the rails where the cover clicks into position. [:@] I had to get a replacement and after reading that the base foam for the Recaro’s was discontinued last year I thought I had no chance. :censored:

I searched on the internet for a replacement. For a couple of months I found nothing, but after speaking with my mate who has his own garage he told me to contact TPS and see if any foam base’s were in the country. Luck was on my side and over this summer I managed to source a brand new foam base one of eight left in the country. :D I have since fitted the foam base and cover and the driver’s seat is back in the car:p.

Whilst putting together the passenger side I noticed the adjustable lever that adjusts the height had broken.
So currently sorting the retaining pin the spring locates round to give the adjustment up and down.

Sorted! That's another thing saved in my eBay watch list that grows increasingly longer by the day.

It looks like a standard single din Leon console to me.

If you'd read the thread you'd know why the switches are configured this way.

The switches are all from a LHD vehicle, this way you can have heated front seat switches but you trade off the cup holder.

Yeah it can be done as the dash is essentially the same although I'm not 100% sure if the plastic grains and colour are an exact match.
It's an cheap and easy way to get a double din console though plus I prefer the appearance of the Audi switchgear and cup holder.

I've got the double din consoles from a Seat Toledo V5.

Yeah you could do although it'd be worth using the search function first as I'm pretty certain it's been covered at some point.

I'm actually looking into utilising the internals of the A3 glovebox as it's considerably more functional.

Anyway, let's not hijack this thread anymore.
