Hi guys

Here is the video of the problem I have. It's like a screeching sound when I turn the engine. Spent today took the car to a few mechanics, some said it's normal (?), some said it's the starter motor. Some said also could be the alternator. Noise seems to come from the right as you're looking at the car. Here is the link to video

I don't have a petrol engined Leon but I've heard this sort of noise on startup of other cars in the past so I would say that it could be normal.

It's more of a very brief momentary squeal/squeak than a screech and might just be the way the starter motor engages on the TFSI engines.

I would just keep an eye on it and if the period of the noise gets longer or continues while the engine has fire up then that would be the time to start getting concerned.

Thanks. Reason why I'm concerned is that it feels like it momentarily struggles to start. Not like a smooth start. I've had bad luck with cars, and that where the shelling out the cash starts, as mechanics presume its this and that

It's quite possible that the starter motor is starting to exhibit some minor problems which is responsible for both the squeal and the initial sluggishness at turning the engine over, although that said, the engine is actually firing up pretty quickly.

If you have the time and inclination along with some spare money then it might be worth replacing the starter motor for peace of mind although unfortunately there is no guarantee that doing so will fix your problem.

Alternatively you could just wait and see if it gets any worse. If it does, it may then be easier to pinpoint more accurately where the source of the noise is coming from and what is causing it.

Thanks bro. Thing is I've only had the car for a week, and dealer has agreed to cover full cost of whatever the squeal issue is, so I'm kind of at that right moment. Thereafter if it gets worse, it's out of my pocket. That issue was they're at purchase. But u know as mechanics go, you go in for a bulb change and they end up telling its an issue with something else. I know u guys have the same cars, so defo the experts are here.

In that case it sounds like you have nothing to lose by getting the dealer to pay for a replacement starter motor. I would say that is probably the most likely cause based on the noise and the sluggish initial turnover.

If it was the alternator then I would expect it to be squealing the whole time the engine was running, however, if you want to rule that out completely, remove the auxiliary belt (NOTE: auxiliary belt, not cam belt) and start the engine. With this belt removed, neither the alternator or the aircon compressor will be running. If the squeal is still there you know it has nothing to do with either the alternator or aircon compressor. You can't do any damage by running the engine with the auxiliary belt removed but the car ignition system will be running purely off the battery so it would be advisable not to keep the engine running for too long like that.

I second Speed-FReek, also if the dealer is paying for it why dont you let them sort it?

That's what I'm going to do, just wanted to narrow it down, as I'm worried if it wasn't that, what else could it be? Dealer would tell me to get lost then

What about water pump, what are the symptoms of that starting to go etc

had a screech on my first car occasionally like this. it was a tiny 1 litre corsa, was told it was "the starter motor going back in" which confused me even more but its clearly a well known thing.

of course if its under warranty then by all means pester the garage.

Yes pestering is what I did. It's just finding a bloody good mechanic in London. I've not had the need for one in years, all the side street ones are unreliable or packed up and left. All I have is Halfords auto centre or kwik fit

Wherever you go. Do not go to Seat Reading. They will ask you to leave the car for a whole day and when you get back they will tell you that your car rolls on 4 wheels and boasts and impressive combustion engine. If you are lucky they will tell you the color of your car and if you ask nicely the might even throw in your reg number so you can have it for future references...
