Hi, I was talking last night with a friend who works for the local police force (UK) and said that there's been a major increase in cars of the Formentor size range (Ford Kuga, Qashqai etc) being stolen in the local area and suggested a steering lock.
I've had a look but the full steering wheel cover locks I've seen don't seem compatible with the flat bottom wheel.
I've never bought something like that before so wondered what people's views/suggestions were? I've seen a bar style one Stoplock Pro Elite but no clue how effective that sort of thing is.

How are they stealing? Is it using the keyless entry signal relay method? If so, i believe the cupra keys do not broadcast unless they are being physically moved. So should be fine. Else, get a anti signal storage box for the keys, or get a ghost code configured. Wouldnt bother with steering lock personally. Easily cut anyway. IMO

I’m using a Halfords steering lock as a short term measue until I can get my Autowatch Ghost fitted. I’m also storing the keys in a Faraday pouch.

As far as I'm aware the medium disklok will work ok with the formentor and is still a effective deterrent.

I have one plus a ghost immobiliser from my m140i that I'll be transferring over once I get my vz2.

It's all about the deterrent and then slowing down any attempt to steal...nothings 100 percent effective but you can make their lives difficult enough to move onto another target.

I say these things as a retired police officer.

Yup, exactly regarding the first point. I think they're identical to other VW group car fobs, and if so, then they have a motion sensor in them. So sitting on a hall table or similar, they won't be active.

So what are they doing with stolen ones? New model, so no market for parts or fixing/cloning crashed ones. Parts for lower Leon models? But Leon is new too.

Good luck with the Ghost. I’ve a pre-facelift Cupra Ateca, and the local (very good) auto security company spent the best part of 2 days trying, with the help of Autowatch, to get a Ghost II to work. They gave up.

That's disappointing news; I'd better speak to my Ghost dealer.

Sold abroad apparently, it was only a quick chat and trying to be helpful. Didn't go into that much detail.

From all the cars I had in UK, only one was stolen, 2 years after my ownerhsip ended and car was located at the time somewhere near Leeds. I don't add any extra security to my cars.

Never lived in the UK, but back home in NZ I had one car stolen, my treasured R32 Skyline...

Since then though - nothing. Not even damage.

I had 2 cars and one set of alloy wheels stolen in Europe, but that was different and long time ago. And cure for that was to get brand new car, which wasn't old enough to be stolen for parts. Keyless revived car theft business, but now it should get better, if you can switch it off in car menu or key becomes inactive. In Audi, I couldn't switch it off or deactivate, so used Faraday pouch.

Yep, early keyless in particular was a boon - not only because of the piggyback method, but easily decoded also - it's gotten better since, thank God.

I will confirm that the Formentor has the same motion sensor as the VW cars - again, as they have the same fob, I would guess so - but you never know :)

So I checked with my installer and he says he’s checked with Autowatch and it should work. I’ll find out on 10 August when it’s booked for fitting.

Had my VZ2 a week now. I have a disk lok which fits fine on the flat bottomed wheel. I put this on every night. Visible and physical deterrents work well. I also have faraday pouch, again used at night. Hoping that sees me alright. 🤞🏼
