Model Year 24/25 CUPRA formentor Ev charge

Dear Members I recently took ownership of my phev 1.5 CUPRA e hybrid. I am struggling to get my battery to give me close to 120km the charge is no longer capped at 80 % I know set it to 100% and when charged fully I am only receiving 90km range. I charge the CUPRA using my car Zappi home charger. I am not getting near the 120km on a full charge. Does anyone know the reason for this please regards Paul

Is it 22c plus or is it still cold as this can make a difference in mileage, also are there loads of hills where you are and are you using a lot of the AC or heated seats as this can consume a lot of the battery

Hi the issue I have is not with the real world driving my issue is when I charge the Cupra 18.4 battery and charge it fully to 100% the range I am getting is reporting back 90KM the full range on the battery is 120KM but I never get a full charge with full range of 120KM I understand that once you start driving it expected the range is going to drop by 20% the issue I have is the battery is brand new and on a full chaarge only reporting back 90KM range even before I drive it

Like Joolstdi said outside temperature will make a difference. My car has a full range of 36 miles but if th weather is cold like in the winter it drops to 23 miles. Now the weather is warm it has gone up to 33 miles this week. The range will always be different based on outside temperature. Also don't forget the 120km range advertised is the max and would have been tested in perfect conditions and in a laboratory.

The full range of the battery is NOT driving-conditions/style independent. The onboard computer that estimates the ranges (electric or fuel) will always use the info over the last few tens of km and the current outside conditions (as already mentioned) to estimate the "expected" range ahead. There's NO "factory-reset" of your driving history (consumptions, driving style) once you plug your car to the charger - such that it would predict the desired 120 km range. And it also takes into account the temp. - AFAIK the sweetspot is somewhere between 16-20 Celsius.
For example, if your last part of the trip (before charging your car) is mainly downhill with a ridiculously-low energy consumption, at the right temp's you might even get the surprise of seeing a range "prediction" higher than 120 km once fully charged.

The real world quoted figure is 82 miles

If I use it in hybrid mode, for a long journey, and then charge it fully, it’ll report the 82 miles
However, if I’ve been driving it round town on electric only for a few days, 100% battery will only give me 50-60 miles

Hi Guys this is so helpful thank you so much for your help in understanding this I was worried that there is something wrong with the battery. So in summary than I can never expect to get the battery to report 120KM of range it will vary so far I see the range vary from 90KM up to 114KM. Then ontop of this I should also expect to lose 15% aprox of that 90KM based on driving conditions and temp outside and other variable factors.

Thank you Ouzify I have mostly been driving in EV mode and not hybrid as my daily commute is aprox 50KM I assume for a longer trip it is much more economical to put the car in Hybrid mode with the battery fully charged. I was going to buy the cupra leon hybrid but decided to go for the formentor in the end. I did see that the leon has a slighly higher max range then the formentor

Hi just to check with you so for long journeys charge the battery to 100% then drive the journey fully in hybrid mode and I should get maximum range. Is that what you are saying

The hybrid on these seem really good

If you’re only doing short journeys, 100% use electric mode

If you plan on doing longer ones, I’d recommend going to hybrid mode.

From what I’ve found, if you use android auto, or apple car play for navigation, the car will use the hybrid system as usual, but you’ll run out of electric before your destination
However, if you use the inbuilt sat nav, it seems to use that data to help manage your hybrid battery life and will do the electric based on that, so you’ll reach your destination with a little bit of battery left

Hi Ouzify This is great to know. I dont have the inbuilt nav system it was an extra which I did not buy as far as I am aware.

You can always reserve some energy for later use - I do that frequently on my long journeys. For trips that are long-enough to completely deplete my battery (I have the pre-facelift, so ~10 kWh usable) I save some of the battery capacity for the destination, if that is an urban area. It makes a lot of sense to run in EV while urban, than use the ICE.
Also, when I have 1-day trips going hiking (so no charging available at the destination) I preserve about half the battery for the return, and also keep some battery for the very-end, enough to get me across town in EV-mode.

Yeah, there is the preserve battery function
I don’t tend to use it on mine as I’ve always found the car to manage it well enough that when I reach my destination, I’m in electric mode for the final mile or so

But, if I wasn’t able to charge at the destination
Absolutely would use the preserve function

Thank you for taking the time to help me. DO you think cupra formentor will make a bigger PHEV battery that has a range closer real world range closer to 200k which might mean more realistically a range of 150KM

I wouldn't hold my breath for that waiting to happen... especially since they recently doubled the battery capacity.
The range you are mentioning would require another (almost) doubling of the capacity, up to somewhere in the upper 40s - which is already in the small electric cars territory.

Hi yes good point then it becomes more EV then PHEV maybe. I plugged in the car last night and the range is showing as 119KM this morning. Temp was 10deg.

I have a question for the Facelift PHEV owners...
I picked up my "upgrade" (from pre-FL to FL Formentor) a few weeks ago. The problem I have is that each time I connect the car to the charging station, after a few seconds (checks/comm car-station) the RED LED comes ON at the charging port of the car, and the infotainment charging screen says "Charging system error". The solution I found (and it always works!) is to get into the car, put the ignition on (Start-button without pressing the brake pedal) - and this somehow "forces" a new check/communication between the car and the station. In a couple of seconds it starts charging without any other problem.
This scenario is the same on every charge attempt, and it never happened with the pre-facelift Formentor that I was charging almost everyday using the very same charging stations.

Any of you had or seen a similar behavior?

Small (and sad) update on the problem described in my previous post:
- had an appointment with the dealership after almost 2 weeks of waiting
- they scratched their heads for more than 3 hours, scanning for errors, charging the car (with a wall-socket adatpter - not with the AC cable) - found NO problems!
- explained them the errors occur EACH time I'm charging @AC station -> they tested with the AC station they had inside the workshop - it was faulty. Went outside in the parking lot to test with a different station - it was also faulty, but they managed to make it work after several restarts (the charging station)
- they managed to charge via AC after many attempts, but by that time it was already hard to say whether it was a problem with the car's charging management or with their charging infrastructure...
- they also checked for SW updates for the charging system - all up to date
- I left the dealership convinced they didn't fix the problem, told them I'll let them know the result once I get back home to the charging stations I usually use
- obviously - the problem persists: I get the same error at each charging-attempt, and I can solve it always with the "procedure" described above.
I'm seriously thinking about writing to Cupra HQ, but I doubt they'll have any solution other than sending me to the dealership again and again...
