Axle beam to IRS

Hi all! Was looking into converting axle beam to independent rear suspension so I can fit a decent set of coil overs.

I’m aware of issues around the exhaust routing etc but assume there can’t be many differences in mounting since the 184 has IRS?

Would appreciate and advise if anyone has done anything similar or know more

There are different 'side member' part numbers for (0N4) 4 link and (0N1) beam axle - so very much doubt its a simple bolt in job!

If you have to have 4 link independent rear - I would by a car with that.

Why do you want to do this? What do you hope to get out of it for the enormous effort involved?

Cheers. Yeah figured the mounting hardware would be different but weird it would have different mounting holes on the chassis as assumed they’d all be mass produced with the same mounting points. More research may be required if I decide to pursue it but was just a thought.

The IRS has a separate subframe to hold all the arms/links - where as the beam axle mounts directly to the body - which is why there is different body panels between the two.

I am all for trying new things mate - but having to weld in new structural floor panels! I would knock this idea on the head.
I'm sure you can get lowering springs for the beam axle cars from somewhere.

I’d check the insurance implications with your insurance company before going ahead. What you’re proposing to do is likely to be considered a significant modification by some insurance companies, which might either mean your insurer doesn’t want to continue providing cover or if they do, your premium might increase (significantly?).

If you really want the independent rear just buy a 180hp car, they come with it. Or a 150hp Golf, it's standard on those too.

Having had both, I would not bother. In most driving the difference is academic and is swings and roundabouts when pressing on.
