So sorry for your situation - hope it is progressing ok?

I saw this on youtube - and think the noise is quite similar to yours - and on this engine it has spun rod bearings! It does however have 246,000 miles on it!

Thanks SuperV8, I have seen this one - I think I have scoured the whole web!

Engine ordered, so we're now waiting on that.

All this couldn't have come at a worse time, losing my job etc, I'm 52 with multiple kids / mortgage etc, so it's not like I am young and commitment free. I'm also the guy that all the neighbours smirk at when they see me cleaning my vehicles every weekend because they leave theirs to rot under dirt and they only service them when warning lights appear. I always thought, "look after your car and it will look after you." Clearly not on this occasion.

Not sure if I want to keep the car after this has all been sorted. I always thought these were bullet proof if you looked after them. I guess statistically it's unlikely to happen again with a different engine ... but ...

Maybe I should get a Caterham again and attach a trailer for the kids and dog when I need to cart them about.

A new engine is £8.5k plus VAT just for the block.
When I first read this, I thought it can't be that much. Having looked into getting a new alloy this week and finding Seat want close to £1k for a single Cupra 300 alloy.........seems about right.

Fingers crossed for you.

Haha - yes, I have a Dax Rush, but with two kids it's currently under a layer of dust and boxes in the garage! I've also wondered how I can take both kids with me :ROFLMAO:

I reckon tasteful aftermarket ones would look best. I have already refurbed my diamond cut LC300 wheels once after Kwik Fit hashed them up installing new tyres (they paid for it). I have always planned to replace with aftermarket wheels if they were damaged again. Diamond cuts are a nightmare to keep nice.

Now, I am not sure if I will keep the car after it's fixed though.

When they get older it's easier as they tend to do their own things then. Don't sell it. Keep it for when they're older and don't need you to be Dad's taxi so much.

Still waiting for the new engine to arrive.

If anyone wants a black, manual (3 pedals joy) LC300 on a 2018, let me know - I am going to sell it once the new engine is in.

£7,638 and 6 pence later, it's back on the road with a lower mileage engine than the original. Turbo was inspected and was fine with no damage. Forgot how great the car was to drive. However, this has ruined my relationship with cars now.

Wow.. that’s a large bill…! Did they find out what went wrong with the original engine?

A piston cracked. At some point they will strip the old engine and try and find out what caused it. Will be interesting to know - but I'm probably going to sell the Cupra now anyway. However.... looking at other cars on the market, they are all shoddy, high mileage and expensive proportionately - maybe I should keep the Cupra.

These big events put a big crack (no pun intended) in your trust with regards to your car no doubt. I had the same after the gearbox failed from my Mercedes CLS55 AMG. After it was repaired, I got mini panic attacks all the time for all sounds the car made (except for the exhaust note) 🙈

I was already planning on selling it, so after the big repair I sold it. I still have the mini panic attacks with regards to the gearbox in the Cupra, even though the DQ250 is a reliable unit (and I dont abuse it).

I bet that was expensive!

It was less than your engine job, but expensive nevertheless 😔

Paid about 5000 euro for complete gearbox overhaul including picking up the car from my home. The torque converter failed. Even though the 5 speed 722.6 gearbox is generally robust, 476bhp 700Nm from a stock engine are pretty crazy figures, especially in 2005!

Good luck with your choice, I totally understand your dilemma 🤝

Like you said - the problem is finding something you know hasn’t been abused. Getting something you don’t know, coupled with the £ loss you’ll realise selling the Cupra, it’s a difficult decision. After changing cars earlier this year, it’s something I no longer enjoy doing! My next one may end up being a battery powered **** box (with warranty) at this rate.

Good luck with the decision.

Thanks v11... I would never buy anything electric. I love cars still and driving, but everything else out there leaves me cold and there is no other car I actually desire. I've been driving for 35 years and I have never experienced not wanting any other car before. Prices of used cars have sky rocketed and new cars are crazy money and they are all boring and rubbish, frankly. And hell would freeze over before I drive an EV.

Motorbikes: yes there is one I very much desire at the moment, but cars? There's nothing else I want. The Cupra is an amazing car to drive, but do I want to keep pumping this amount of money into maintaining it?

I bought my Cupra over 10 years ago and personally the only reason I will get another car is this one dies and hopefully by then I will be to old to drive anyway.
like you new cars leave me cold but what I will say is no matter what car you get even if its been well looked after stuff can still go wrong.

I like to watch the auto auction you tube videos and all you hear about is that this car (and it's across all makes) suffers with this and that, fixed in newer versions but then suffer with this or that.
In my opinion having spent all that money on your motor you know its history, anything else you buy there is no guarantee it wont happen again.

I used to replace my cars as soon as I had to start fixing stuff, my cost of running the car is still a heck of a lot cheaper than buying a new or used motor so just not worth it for me. Plus I still get excited driving her on the road and track.

Agree.

As soon as I drove it for the first time after the fix, I couldn't believe how amazing the car felt - not just the power, but even simple things like how it holds the road and turns in, things you take for granted when you drive it all the time.

I guess you could say that my car did actually die but then I raised it from the dead. I didn't expect it to happen so soon though. I have spoken with a lot of people who work on these cars and the general consensus is that what I experienced happens, but it's not very often over millions of these EA888 units, Someone even told me that it always seems to be those that properly look after their cars that experience what can only be describe as bad luck. My temptation is to keep it, as like you, there is no other car I want, but once bitten twice shy? This is a situation I never expected to be in.
