My car has been having a few small problems recently which I can’t pin point. It’s been smelling of oil and I have noticed a rough idle and significant loss of power but no lights or warnings on the dash at all. It’s on 82k I have had it into 2 garages that say there is nothing wrong but I assume it’s because of no error codes. Also the past week it’s intermittently struggling to start sometimes it’s first crank sometimes it’s quite a few and does a sort of double start.

Do you have any ODBII diagnostics you can use? If not I would recommend buying one. You can get cheap bluetooth ODBII dongles and using a phone app like 'car scanner' you can log the fuel and electrical parameters to see if something looks strange?

'Smell of oil' check for oil leaks? If your turbo leaking? does your engine 'use oil'? pull your engine cover off - any leaks around the injectors? a leaking injector seal can smell 'fumey'
Check your injector amount deviation to check for faulty injector?
Check your DPF pressure differential to check for blocked DPF?

Obviously it's a guess without looking at it, but given all those symptoms, first thing i would be looking for is a split PCV hose or maybe a failed PCV valve. A split there could cause all those issues, yet not be big enough to trigger a fault code yet.

Get a torch and a mirror and have a good look round, I believe on your engine the PCV valve is built into the rocker cover, and you should be able to follow the PCV pipes from there. Give the pipes a gentle squeeze and look for any cracks or splits. Sometimes an oily residue all over the pipe can point to where the problem is. Also check where the pipes join each other and go into the engine etc, look for any that have worked loose.

Probably some info on youtube on the layout if you need help.
