GTD1449vz turbo upgrade CR150 2.0L TDI

Hi everyone! I’ve seen a few previous forums asking about upgrading the turbo on CR150 models to the CR184 turbo (GTD 1449vz) but haven’t found any of the answers I’d have hoped for.
Wondering if anyone has fitted this turbo to their vehicles or know what the score is with it? Is it just plug and play, I’ve seen on one forum that the actuator may need to swapped and another that the EGR is different in some way which I don’t see to be likely as they’re all the same EA288 platform engines?

Any and all advise, knowledge or help would be appreciated. If all fails I’ll let people know how it goes as I’ve got CR184 turbo in the way and plan on fitting it either way.

Thanks in advance!

Don't know details regarding turbo - but I know the 184 has an upgraded clutch & bigger brakes over the 150.

Yeah that is correct. Not to worried about that as I know I’m gonna need a clutch soon anyway so will just upgrade as and when needed. Brakes aren’t an issue

Have a scourer of a parts catalogue - and note any different OEM part numbers.

Oh damn that’s quite useful. Thanks I will have a proper look through to check everything after work and note in the forum after

For info. The EGR system and turbo with exhaust manifold seems to be the same over many of the EA288 engines. At least in their assembly. So mostly likely they would all have the same oil feeds etc. link to parts diagrams: https://www.catcar.info/audivw/?lan...pbGR0YWZlbD09MTQ1NTV8fEdyYWZpaz09MDE0NTYwNzQ2

Will update more when I eventually get this installed on my own vehicle. Not going to be for a while as I’ve been unable to find someone who would tune it and heard running larger turbo without tune isn’t the best of ideas.

You might find more differences between emissions classes?
For example:
CUPA = Euro 5
CUNA = Euro 6

I'm sure anyone who would do a custom tune car sort it -

Yeah they seem to be grouped by the emissions classes. Not an issue when it comes to the actual turbo just the egr cooler, DPF etc.

I had a company lined up with a decent reputation but they’ve told me they won’t tune anything with aftermarket turbo. I don’t know if you could class this as aftermarket being off the same engine but is what it is. Just need to put in some research to find someone willing to properly tune it.

Hi there,

I’ve just registered on the forum to exchange some info and experiences.

How’s your project going?
I’m driving an A3 8V 2.0 TDI (150 PS) with a GTD1449VZ. It was making around 210 hp, and then I swapped the MAP sensor for one from a Passat 240 hp so we could push for more boost.

That part has been a bit tricky since there seem to be some fine adjustments involved. Now it feels like it has more power (though I haven’t had it on the dyno yet), but sometimes it goes into a sort of “limp mode” where the turbo doesn’t spool and there’s no boost. It’s rare, but it does happen.

I’m curious if anyone here has had successful tunes with this hardware.
(Additionally, I’ve swapped the exhaust for one from a Golf GTI.)

Looking forward to your reply!

Hi,
Unfortunately I didn’t have the bottle to pull it off! Didn’t fancy spending a couple grand for a potential 30hp move than just a stage 1. However i have put in a lot of research, most of which is detailed in the forum above, and the turbos are plug and play bar tuning. I’d maybe check you don’t have a boost leak or a faulty actuator for your limo mode issue. As long as you’ve had it properly tuned to the new turbo and buts etc then I don’t see there being nah issue.

Hope this helped! Please do send me some video etc of you car as I’d love to see what I’m missing

Could you please share the forum/thread again where I can follow this research? (And do you know any similar working setups?)

Regarding my project – I don’t think it’s a boost leak, since the issue doesn’t occur all the time.
Everything was working fine with the exact same setup, except without the new MAP sensor (which really was brand new) and, of course, the old software.

Last week, we tested the car with the original sensor to check if the new one might be faulty, but the “limp mode” actually happened more often with it. So, I’m assuming the issue lies in the software.

The tuner believes the turbo isn’t able to build the required boost early enough, so he adjusted it to spool more slowly. That might have reduced the frequency of the issue slightly, but it’s still there.

I hope I’ll find time next week to go over it again with the tuner.
As soon as I have a new dyno run, I’ll post the results here.

(I know I’m not driving a Cupra, but we’re still close relatives! 😎)

Kind regards!

Most of the research I’ve done is detailed in this forum. I have links to diagram and references in there but it all basically says that they’re the same. Only things I could see being an issue is the charge pipe, EGR or DPF ( because obviously these need to be installed “for the environment” ) but otherwise with tuning there’s no difference between the engines. Themselves. The injectors and clutch are different but that wouldn’t affect your boost.

I do think it’ll likely be the tuning or vacuum leak or somethign small and annoying. At least I hope for your sake

I might have some more information I haven’t uploaded but it’ll be on my PC at home so won’t be able to check until later.
