Hi

I purchased a Seat Leon FR, 2021 plate. Looking through the documents there is a service plan document which expires 2026 and has a policy number.

Is the service plan attached to the owner or the car, so would I be able to get the car serviced which is due using the service plan policy document which came with the car?

Thanks in advance

The service plan is with the car, although it expires in 2026, the service(s) may have been used. You should be able find out through Seat dealer or Customer care.

I’m assuming that the position with regard to Seat service plans and change of vehicle ownership is the same as it is for VW as both are administered by VW Financial Services (VWFS). The last VW service plan I had included the following clauses

7. Termination by You
(b) If You terminate this Agreement, the amounts already paid by you are not refundable as these are reflective of our costs incurred in providing you with the Service plan, and other costs associated with the administration and set up of the Agreement.

10. Transfer of ownership
(a) You may assign this Agreement to any subsequent owners of the Vehicle for the Contract Period provided that You pay all the payments shown on this document before the Agreement is assigned. Once all payments have been received we will agree to the assigning of the Agreement providing that You advise Us in writing following the transfer of ownership and that the purchaser of the Vehicle agrees in writing to Us to be bound by the terms and conditions of this Agreement in every way.
(b) The Agreement is not transferable to another vehicle.

My interpretation of the above;
  • The service plan is attached to the vehicle, not the owner so they can’t transfer it to a different vehicle.
  • If the plan has been paid for in full by the vehicle’s previous owner and they sell the vehicle, if there are still unused services under the plan, the plan can be transferred to the new owner, provided its fully paid up by the previous owner prior to transfer.
  • There’s no return of monies paid to the previous owner if they cancel the service plan before the plan expiry date. Therefore there’s by no benefit to the previous owner of cancelling the plan if they paid for it up front in full at the time they took it out. However, I dare say most people will opt for the monthly payment option, and if they sell the car, they may just stop making the payments, in which case the plan is probably treated as cancelled by VWFS.
So IMHO whether or not there are any unused services you can make use of under the plan will depend on whether it’s been fully paid up by the previous owner. If you bought your car from a Seat dealer, I’d either ask the dealer to check if it’s been fully paid for paid for or alternatively, I’d contact VWFS and ask them.
