Got this today in the Reuters Auto File

Germany’s auto industry has been clear about its desire to amend, delay or simply get rid of the European Union’s 2035 ban on the sale of new fossil-fuel cars.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has also now made it clear that he has the auto industry’s back, declaring if he has his way “there will be no such hard cut in 2035."

Like Germany’s economically important auto industry, Merz says he favors allowing different technologies incorporating combustion engines such as plug-in hybrids and EV range extenders to thrive beyond 2035.

For many years Germany largely got what it wanted when it came to the EU, not least of all because it pays a lot of the bloc’s bills. But it remains to be seen how much the European Commission is willing to budge on key climate commitments.

and today in the press, its still not a done deal but change may be in the air

  • European Commission expected to make announcement on Tuesday
  • Ban could be pushed back 5 years or softened indefinitely -sources
  • Most significant climb-down on EU green policies of past 5 years
  • EV makers say reneging on ban would yield more ground to China
BRUSSELS/LONDON/STOCKHOLM, Dec 15 (Reuters) - The European Commission is expected on Tuesday to reverse the EU's effective ban on sales of new combustion-engine cars from 2035, bowing to intense pressure from Germany, Italy and European automakers struggling against Chinese and U.S. rivals.
The move, the details of which are still being hashed out by EU officials ahead of its unveiling, could see the effective ban pushed back by five years or softened indefinitely, official and industry sources said.

Makes one wonder if the automakers would have a legal case against the EU for being forced down the EV road - costing billions of whatever currency you can think of and 10s of thousands of jobs.

Could see that coming for a while. Looks like at least a couple of manufacturers (Porsche come to mind) have flipped on starting to focus on EVs back to ICE.

What they may do is adjust to only allow petrol engines in hybrid cars, although it looks like just a delay in the start date currently.

Hopefully they will use that time to roll out the charging infrastructure, but probably not.

The bigger issue is that they need to roll out power generator capacity. Charging an EV is well in excess of conventional power use. How many more wind generators can you guys stuff into the North Sea? At least we have sunlight most of the time, down here, and solar energy is a viable solution for us.

My view of hybrids is that they add little value. The batteries are too small with a 50 - 100km range, and the petrol engines are often too small to pull the heavier car after the battery goes flat, which increases fuel consumption and effectively doubles the costs of owning the car.

I think we are currently running just under 50% of capacity using Green energy production (Wind, Sea, Solar and Bio Fuels) Europe in general is looking back at Nuclear energy again and there is room for more of all of these items so who knows maybe one day we will go all green.

Re Hybrids its odd because FORD have just pulled out of the all EV market and there new plans include refocusing investments on hybrid vehicles, including plug-in models rather than pure EVs. Bottom line if people will buy them then car manufacturers will make them.

I do think there is a place for hybrid in the small car segment, I have been looking at the latest Honda jazz hybrid for my mrs

Well Germany / EU may be trying to delay the inevitable that Europe wont catch up with Chinese car makers. Thats my reading. Rather than the closure of the German car industry they will delay the closure of the ICE industry. That would only be a delay. Mass production will finish at some stage. They are on the slippery slope. Whether we have enough generator electricity capacity and electric storage is another matter. 25% of cars currently being sold in the UK are EVs. Nothing to be sneezed at. It's a question of balancing power generation and infrastructure to support the EV market but ICE will be around in the used market for sometime. Those ICE Cupras will be collectors items

Ford. That will be the Trump effect. MAGA are non believers in net zero and global warming. God gave you all these resources to use even thou it might poison or drown you in climate change 😉. Loony right.

They eventually rumbled that global world development was leaving them behind but massaged it as "globalists" being the enemy. They want the third way, coach and horses (for the third world).

Third World development was inevitable, having developed we call it the Global South. Some of those countries are unrecognisable now but fossil fuels that power World development are releasing all those carbons held in the dead micro organisms that are statched away in time in memorial. Releasing those carbons, gives you global warming and climate change but that's far too scientific for some after all God did give you all of this stuff to misuse and profit from or act sensibly. Human choice whether you believe in religion or not, but if you say climate change is a hoax that's one small pesky matter out of the way. Brings us round to profit, whether the EU will do the right thing. Possible future European war they may kick it into the long grass. Who knows.

France just cancelled all there low scam emission zones lol on top of other net con crap that the left invented and global warming that got rebranded yet uk Fabien labour are not following suit yet they suck upto the globalists as that is what they are

You might have been watching too much GB News. Give you a reading list that starts with Limits to Growth

The so called globalists which is an invention of those trying to defeat those that are trying to live within the decaying world. COP are obviously the "globalists" in this demented world that were late to the party that dont understand climate change.

There were other scenarios that bothered people 50 years ago. Finite resources and global war. It turned out we didnt need to worry about finite resources since the world has quite a bit of everything and global war as they fought over those finite resources. But those late to the party want to carve up what kept the world stable from war by zoning the world differently. Another story. Ask Trump and Putin.

The developing world as seen 50 years was judged by some to be unsustainable as fossil fuels were dug up and burnt. Fossil fuels being the little critters that lived on the earth for billions of years that then release the carbons that that create chaos to climate. Coal obviously plant life, oil the critters.

Well if you had been to the developing world 50 years ago you wouldn't have seen Delhi covered in smog. Singapore under the cloud of the rainforest being burnt in Malaysia etc. Ice caps now melting. Sea levels going to go up by many feet. Cliffs collapsing, roads going under and being rerouted as being uneconomic to do anything. Climate change as witnessed by the current lows that Europe is locked into.

Well it wasnt the globalists that unlocked all of this but un-throughfull technical development of only using technology in world economic development that didnt create chaos. Bit of a bummer for some engineers that love their fossil fuels, that they would have to use technologies that didn't create world chaos. Ofcourse there are many that say it's not our problem. Bit late to the party on that one. The anti globalists are trying to make a fast buck by not playing within the new rules. Quick profit today and not worry about the future.

I did work in one of the university think tanks to all of this, but the idea of living off research grants put me off. This think tank were naysayers but it turned out that they were probably wrong. Technology change was the answer and they were correct on that - they didnt dispute that since that was their subject. The fix was electric cars etc. Clean energy etc.

It spurred energy research groups and climate change groups across universities. I got offered a research job in energy up north when my contract finished on telecommunications futures but opted for good old management science, leaving futures research behind. Now everybody thinks they can do management science with a spreadsheet but that is another story. What I did learn from this research unit was the service industry was the growth industry, so you'd get a career in that and yes British industry collapsed as manufacturing moved abroad, all part of world development and trade. Handy working for a think tank at the time. Was one of those TV personalities I use to work with who would pop up on TV from time to time. Another one who I shared an office with did the same on climate change. I'm off to the studio for a radio link he'd say. In those days you had to go to local radio stations for your national broadcast. Sun and sand by the sea. More pebble. Guess he'd have a YouTube channel these days. Even I have full fibre now to the home which was a twinkle in the Post Offices eye at the time. No need for Prestel (spelling) got the Internet. Technology development used correctly is the answer to man's issues, obviously luddities can't handle that one.

Just look at EU news over the ban that they are cutting down or cancelling as it’s a complete cash cow and just look what they want to replace it with as it’s less recyclable and worse for the environment,
the whole climate narrative is a scam as it was rebranded from global warming to climate change the same globalist and the other that mention it oddly all have beach from property lol, even greenpeace have said CO2 is dangerously low even the real scientists and geologists get silenced as they know what there talking about not cherry picked parts in history as they never mention the earth didn’t have ice caps in certiorari points in history, they never mention active volcanoes under certain parts of ices caps but they do show the melting ice bergs but not mention they have a 4 month life span after breaking off the ice shelf,
even usa banned cloud seeding and that was going on since 1948..
Globlisam is all down to having a one world government and started late 1800s it’s nothing todo with save it the planet and have a better life and just look what’s linked to is Davos, wef ect and soros is involved and they love keeping wars going, I won’t mind look at labour 80% of them are Fabian socialists

There’s was still land and still life even the climate was hotter, more oxygen, high Co2, acid rain you can go on and the earth has cycles, we’re at a solar maximum and still coming out of an ice age

There wasn't the human race then. That didn't exist 200,000 years ago. So yes the earth will continue to turn but with frozen humans. The earth has lost it's diversity of nature.

Social media nonsense and desperate Americans that feel cheeted by world development and trying to make a fast buck out of the order of the disorder of climate change.
