Yesterday at the rear of the car underneath between the rear tyres I noticed an unusual sound when I started the engine but stopped when I drove the car. A few hours previous to this I got the coil light on the dashboard and the stop start disabled itself with an "error".
The same day I took my car for a spin and conked out about a mile from home. The ignition was just turning over like it does when you run out of fuel.
Breakdown has taken it home but I'm not mechanic but I'm thinking is it the fuel pump? The initial grumbling of my car was between the rear tyres and I don't seem to hear any hissing noise when I turn the ignition key.

It so my friend is a mechanic but he's unavailable to chat to as he's away on honeymoon. I was thinking if it is a fuel pump then where do I buy one from? I can't find any on Eurocar parts. There is one on GSF for £350 but they also sell fuel feed unit for £97. I wasn't going to purchase anything just yet but I wanted to know what cost I was looking at and which item is it likely to be?

Ps the glow plugs were recently changed

What sort of sound was it?

Fuel delivery unit (pump) for Diesel depending on PR codes either: If you PM me you VIN or Reg I can confirm which.
5Q0 919 050 BA
5Q0 919 050 BB

There is also a fuel pump control unit which is a little black box near your pump which controls your pump.

Would be wise to read your fault codes first before playing parts roulet, though if you heard some sort of grinding noise under your rear seat this would suggest your pump is not happy.

I'd be looking at less than £100 for an aftermarket pump. £350 is way too much. Can get a genuine one for that.

Quite simple to take out, you need to remove your rear seat base, vacuum up any dust around the pump first, the pump has a large plastic collar you need to undo which usually needs a little gentle 'persuasion' with a knocking stick.

Hi.

When I turned the engine on it was an intermittent scratching/ scraping sound for just a few seconds where the fuel tank is. When I drove it for 2 miles the engine then just cut out. When I tried to turn the engine again it was as though there was no fuel in it and the coil light stayed on. (All were changed 6 months ago). There is no fuel sound when I put igntion on. My friend who is a mechanic opened the bonnet and detached a line and told me to turn the ignition key once but no fuel came out.
I think he is ordering the part from GSF for around £98. He seems to pretty much think it's that part under the back seat.

A flashing coil light can also mean you have an engine fault code, not just fault coils.
For your VIN for your CUPA engine:
5Q0919050BA Fuel delivery unit (pump module)
3Q0906121B Control unit for fuel pump

The genuine pump is made by VDO/Continental, their aftermarket number 2803580109302
Hella 8TF 358 304-911 seems like a good cost option.

Thanks very much for your advise. Hopefully the car will get sorted this week. It's a pity the car is currently 50 miles away from me on my girlfriend's drive. I'm guessing it won't take too long to replace??

Should be a quick simple job. Mine has been a little noisy so this has also prompted me to replace mine.
