Sadly, the camshaft on my beloved Mrk2 has broken.

Does anyone know if this is worth fixing or is it not advisable to not go down that path? The mechanic said unforseen issues may arise once the engine is opened up- for example damage to the pistons.

Here is a better photo of the failed camshaft. (Top left of the block). The noise it made was like a knocking clap clap when trying to crank it. The engine would not start. Watch out for this with your vehicle:(

No symptoms, no warning signs appeared beforehand. No warning lights in the dash. It just went.

Anyone come across this and have any advice?

Much appreciated

Max

Sorry to see the damage. Yeah there is a possibility that metal has made it's way down inside the engine and damaged other parts, but you'd need to strip and inspect it really. If it was just cranking over rather than running, then there's a pretty good chance you may have got away without damaging anything else,
but the trouble is i'd be worried that there were bits of metal caught up in there, and cleaning it out would involve taking the engine to bits.

Probably easier and cheaper labour wise to swap the whole engine for one from a reputable source, and swap over all the things like injectors/turbo etc from your car.
