Hi im just after some info really, I have a Ibiza 1.2 mk4 and was looking to convert the engine to the mk4 1.8t. If anyone has done this already or know what's involved then please help me out. I've been looking on all forums to try and find out what I will need to have done but most people reply with dont bother just buy the 1.8t and that is not what I want to do as I'm 19 and can't get insured!! So don't reply if your going to say don't bother lol. Any sort of help or info on this conversion would be much appreciated thanks.

Basically need complete engine with the harness and also will need the ecu at least. Probably need engine mounts and of course a whole new exhaust. It is possible to do but is a big job. Look around for a car that's breaking and get the engine, harness and ecu from the same car. At least that way it's programmed to work together without the hassle of getting it flashed and programmed later on.

You do realise that what you end up with when you turn a 1.2 into a 1.8t will be more expensive to insure than the 1.8t you just took all the bits out of in the first place.

Unless you are intending to just do the conversion and keep quiet about it? If that's a case it's a lot easier to just buy a 1.8t in the right colour and just swap the the number plates over.

Basically what I ment to say was get the complete front end. Engine radiator all pipework fuel lines. Whatever connects to the engine within the engine bay you will need the lot. I would imagine driveshafts are needed and possibly the subframe may be different but I'm not sure. I don't know exactly what's needed but i assume that all the other parts in the engine bay are not the same as you would use on a 1.8t.

I was intending to keep it as a 1.2 on log book. I didn't think about buying another and just swapping the plates sounds like an easier option to be fair. Do you know wether I could put the number plate of the 1.2 onto the 1.8 and get it through an mot or will they check the engine and so on? Thanks.

Thanks this helps a lot il price up the cost of the conversion and see if its worth doing now sound for that.

You can do it if you want to; but if you have a crash then your insurance is void so you will have to pay. On top of which good luck trying to get insurance for ANY car over the next 3/4 years.
Possibly even go down as insurance fraud and get jail time.

Moral of the story- do it if you want; but you're better off just driving a 1.2.

Not the sharpest tool to advertise your intention.

As above really, not only is it fraud, but lets just imagine you god for bid hit someone and killed them. Who's gonna pay out as your insurance sure wont! Lets imagine you hit another road user, if both cars were written off and yours insurance was void, you'd have a lot to answer for.

As for swapping number plates, that's just pathetic! If you want a faster car then pay the premium like everyone else does.

I can't believe some of the sh*te that gets put on forums.

if you've searched all the forums then you havent searched very hard :cartman:

Andy Glitcher with a Blue 1.2 did exactly this, bought a written off cupra 1.8t and stole everything. You'll find him mainly on IOC, he's one of the mods if im not mistaken so, if you look properly you'll find the thread.

yes he has something nowbody else has however, it is more expensive and as your 19 alot of insurers will not insure you on a performance modified car, and the ones that do, will rape frankly,

do it, dont do it, but you are wasting your money and time, just wait until your 21 and buy a faster car then, as you'll have alot more choice, you'll have more no claims, and if your 19, chances are your going to have a prang of some nature so it will be good to get that out of the way in a car that will cost pence to repair.
