6-speed gearbox whining - issues?

My Leon FR TDI (Mk 1) has the 6-speed 'box.

Since I got the car I get a whining noise from the transmission when decelerating, in gear, and also when the car is freewheeling out of gear.

I've read about issues with bearing failures on the 6-speed box, and also rivets popping out of differentials, which are pretty scary:cry:

Is my noisy gearbox about to bork, or is there a mileage at which they fail, as I don't fancy shelling out £2k+ for a new one & might ditch the car instead?

Cheers,

Ben

pretty common issue on these cars and not really worth worrying about unless youre lucky like me and get it rebuilt under warranty (750) :)

Might last a while longer yet then? I just don't trust the car as it's developed too many faults already:(

I wonder when the chocolate camshaft will rear its ugly head:confused:

I would contact someone dealing with gearboxes. They will be able to fix it. They grind down the hole in gearbox shell and put steel O-ring in to fix the bearing into the right place. They charge for it cca. 300 here and it is for ever fixed.

Doesn't necessarily mean your box is on the way out, it's very common with MK1's and boxes have gone on years with these whines. It is a characteristic of them, but of course if you can afford to and have the time to take yours out and get a specialist take a look then you should to put your mind at ease.

My box only whines well more like a whirring noise from 30 - 35 mph, really annoying tho.

I've had 5th gear whine for over 90,000 miles now. Would like to put some gearbox additive in to quiet it down, but knowing how specific the fluids have to be on these cars, I won't risk it.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but i've also had the whine for a while in 3rd gear only. It's now affecting 2nd and 4th recently (sounding a lot worse than 3rd), however my clutch is on its way out badly too.

Could the noises in 2nd and 4th possibly be associated with the clutch? In 18yrs of driving never had a clutch go on me so really not familiar with all the symptoms that this would bring other than your usual tell-tell signs (slipping, high biting point etc). Cheers
