Hi all,

My MK2 Fr has been running fine.. all of a sudden today, the car start chugging/vibrating.. im guessing misfiring as I hit around 2500/3000rpm.. Soon after, the engine management light came on and the car was just struggling to move.

The more I drove it, the engine management light start flashing on and off and the car would just not go over 3000rpm. I got it home, plugged it in and the following code came up:

PO351 - Ignition Coil A Primary/Secondary Circuit

I then erased the code and took it for another drive.. a few minutes down the line, same problem, but this time, this error code came up:

PO301 - Cylinder 1 Misfire detected

Done the same.. erased, drove around, now the cars fine. However, gotta feeling that it'll come back again.

Has anyone had experience with this, or these codes?

Thanks!

Cheers for the reply, pal. Is there a definite way of knowing or is it a case of trial and error?

Swap cylinder 1 coilpack with cylinder 2 check if fault code changes to cylinder 2 on VAGCOM and then you know the coil pack is pumped. Same goes for spark plugs

Brilliant idea.. is there a guide anywhere to do this?? Is it an easy job??

Piece of piss mate. Engine cover off making sure you disconnect intake you will see the 4 black coils at back of engine. I clip wiring harness off of them. Prize out cylinder 1 and cylinder 2 using screwdriver

Spot on, I gave it a go, got the engine cover off and took the coil pack out of cylinder 1 and this is what I found:

Replaced it with one I got from the local scrappy for £18 and job done, no more misfiring, cars back to 100%!

Only thing I didn't quite understand was when I took the old coil pack out, the space was filled with water, I drained it out with a tissue but just not sure if that shows an underlying problem?
