Just been looking at the new leons and comparing the 1.2 tsi engine to mine in my ibiza. The engine in mine says 55mpg and its an 8 valve. The leon however has a 57mpg 16 valve engine with the same standard 103bhp. Mine has been remapped to 130,
So because this engine in the leon has more valves does that mean a remap on that engine could technically boot out more horsepower? ... Do more valves really make that much difference?

No, the 1.2 TSI engines are all 8 valve I'm sure. The Leon has a 6 speed gearbox and may have had some tweaks to the engine management. The Leons all have start-stop and recuperation which they dropped from the UK Ibiza. A 16 valve engine would probably be less economical; one reason for choosing 8 valves was to get lower friction in the valve train.

I just downloaded the Golf Mk VII brochure. It states:-

1.2 litre/105 PS (01) (77 kW) petrol engine: EU5 emissions standard, four cylinder in-line direct injection engine, two valves per cylinder and turbocharger module with electric boost pressure regulation. Available with a six speed manual or a seven speed automatic DSG transmission

There is some chatter on the Web about 16 valves but I suspect it is nonsense. I find it hard to believe that there would be a new 16 valve version producing the same power at the same engine speed and the same torque too. What would be the point? Why would they spend all the cash developing it?

1.2 TSI

my 1.2 TSI is the Ibiza FR with the five speed manual gearbox, will this be the new one that uses the belt and 16v?

its a 12 plate.

The technical data in the latest 'facelift' Ibiza brochure still lists the 1.2TSI as an 8v and I'm pretty sure the documentation for my '13' plate FR states it's an 8v also.

The 16v 1.2 TSI engine probably won't reach the Ibiza until the next facelift/model.

Personally I prefer a chain driven engine, although I think the new belts are supposed to last a lifetime?

Yeah the new 16v belt engine (EA211) is supposed to last a lifetime, but then again so is the chain. Only time will tell!
