1.4 Gearbox

The gearbox on my wife's 1.4i is starting to make some alarming noises - gearshift is still clean & solid the worst noise is on overun - so I assume it is the diff or final drive.

As a result I am on the look out for a replacement and need some advice. The engine is an APQ and gearbox code from the boot sticker appears to be DCJ - I assume that this is an 085 gearbox and would be grateful if this could be confirmed.

From reading previous posts on this subject I have gleaned that the gearbox was also fitted to a number of other VAG models - would a box from a 1.4 16V fit or would a box from a newer 1.4 model fit.

085 is the correct gearbox type for the 1.4 APQ

The 085 was used in a number of VW's from around the mid-late 90's, so Mk3 Golf 1.4, Mk4 Polo 1.4 etc

Not sure on the 16v thing though.

16v box is different and won't work. If its worse on the over run it may be the clutch bearing.

But a 1.4 8v box from the same VAG year should be good

Thank you for your responses.

I will also have a look into the clutch bearing as suggested by Cupra Kid, as the gearbox itself seems to work fine and generally feels quite solid, it's just that noise - Is there any way other than taking the gearbox out to check the clutch bearing?
