I have had this car for about 7 months and it has developed a metallic rattle from the engine. Its worse when its cold and sounds like it is on the drivers side.

Defo not a knocking sound more of a rattle, I have checked things like the exhaust heatsheild and anything loose that I can see.

Its a BBY engine and has just covered 75k, not sure when or if its had a cambelt change so could it be the idlers / tensioners. Thought it could have been the alternator bearings but they tend to grind not rattle.

Hi,

this sounds similar to noises I have on my 06 1.4 Sport. I have been told that it's the hydraulic tappits amongst other things. Had these changed by the dealer (supposedly) but still just as noisy. Its very annoying. Many people say that its common on the 1.4 and is just a characteristic of the engine. My current mechanic disagrees, however he cannot identify the cause at this time

Let me know if you have any joy. cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Deschain,

May be its an inherant problem then, I have known idler/tensioner bearings to rattle in the past. I would of thought that if its the tappits they usually make a tapping or clicking noise when worn ?

Still, its having a cam belt and water pump change in a week or two so I will ask the garage to look at this as well.
