1.5 tsi oil filter mount problem

Hello guys
I'm facing an issue where when I want to change the oil filter, the oil sump adapter comes loose meaning I can't remove the filter it is stuck because the previous owner had some issues.
I then go to the dealership to find the set screw because I couldn't get ahold of a new one.
The dealership told me that the whole oil sump needed to be changed because the socket for the set screw is scuffed and bent where the filter could just pop out.
is the dealership trying to rip me off
thanks

What I am writing might be completely wrong or not relevant, but, I have read that some people, when removing the engine oil filter on EA211 engines, have discovered that the threaded "hollow joining piece" has partially unscrewed when removing the engine oil filter, now if anyone ignored that or did not notice that that was happening, then eventually the threads in the engine side of this "hollow joining piece" would get damaged. So maybe that is what has been happening to your engine - if that makes sense.

I will say now, after discovering that that can happen, I now always grab the threaded part and check that it is tight before fitting a new engine oil filter.

So you mean number 11 is damaged? and you can't get it out of the filter?
This threaded union is part number 03C115721A and available separately.

Or do you mean the female thread in the sump is damaged? If this is the case - then you'd probably need a new sump part number 05E103603C.

Is there a correct torque setting for the oil filter?

MANN-FILTER W 712/95 (the filter for the 1.4 & 1.5tsi) has 20-2Nm torque on their filter for what its worth.

Just wondering, been dealer serviced till now, just wondered if overtightening might affect adaptor nipple.

EA211 engine have can-filter. Just hand tighten it without any tool. It works for any car with can-filter. I have practice this method for decades without issues :). (Also on the wifes Skoda EA211 3 cyl.)

Sorry no, my Honda requires filter torqued on, 9k revs will loosen it off with dire results, not possible to tighten it by hand the required amount after seal contact.

Okay, there is always exceptions ;). In any case VAG 4-cyl and 3-cyl EA211 has plenty of space around the filter. Some oil on the rubber gasket and clean can /hands (no oil film) for good grip, then you will be able to tighten the filter enough with your hands .

I've always dropped some oil into the new filter so a bit tricky tightening it as I normally get some oil on my hands, but, that problem/issue disappears if you comply with VW Group instructions which for my wife's previous 2002 Polo 1.4 16V and her current car a 2015 Polo 1.2TSI 110PS, ie hand tighten and then torque up to the stated torque, I've just replaced the oil and filter on my 2011 S4 and again torqued it to the correct level - okay in that car the oil cartridge gets fitted into a plastic casing, so using a set torque might be more critical to avoid destroying that casing.

I've also heard of some Ford Transits ending up with unscrewing oil filter as well, so hand tightening is only okay when it is okay, or so far okay!

Regarding our two EA888 engines, Leon Cupra and Golf Alltack, I always use a torque wrench to fullfill the correct level. They have plastic cover, no tin over the filter, therefore I want it to be exact.

This type of filter element uses an 0-ring for sealing - the compression of which is determined during manufacture by the fit/tolerance of the parts - all you're doing by tightening the plastic case it is ensure it isn't over tightened due to the plastic.

For the spin on type filter the compression of the sealing ring is only determined by how tight you turn the can. They used to say spin by hand until the lip makes contact then add 3/4 more turn - similar to spark plug torque method. Whether you could add this additional 3/4 of a turn by hand I have no idea?

The only spin on filter I change in my car servicing remit is a Mitsubishi Colt and this has good access to the filter and have only ever just tighten it by hand over the last 7 years has been fine - using fresh rubber gloves and clean down the outside of the can I can get real good purchase on it -
