How can i tell if the head gasket has gone without taking it apart ???

Here's a few possibilities:

Signs of oil in the coolant
Signs of coolant in the oil
Coolant level dropping (because it's p1ssing out the side of the engine)
Occasional starting problems (if coolant leaks into cylinders and starter motor is trying to compress a cylinder full of coolant against closed valves - been there, done that)

the best way is to run the engine until warm then check the oil cap, if its creamy lookin then your gaskets gone. dont check whilst cold because it'l just be condensation
