Thanks. So there's no way of knowing if it's regenerating when driving at 2k rpm on the motorway?

Nope

This is what frustrates most of us - you do a nice long trip only to find when you pull up at the end of it, that the car is doing a regen and needs to be driven further !!!!

We would all like a light or symbol in the dash that says it is doing a regen so we can adjust our route to finish it.

A light would be useful! Is there anything accessible to monitor in the engine bay? Position of EGR valve?

1.4TDi idle is rough anyway, so must be difficult to detect additional roughness.

Nothing I am aware of to tell if a regen is happening.

Some of the guys were trying to find an OBD gauge that could be programmed to show a regen but I can't find the thread.

The OBD gauge plugs in to the OBD port and shows various things like Coolant temp, rpm, throttle position etc. They were trying to see if one could also show a regen in progerss.

I have had both the exhaust gas temperature sensors replaced. Average 42mpg, mostly learners drivers, low mpg reversing exercises, etc. If I'm careful I can usually get 57mpg from it. Most I've had is 70mpg on what must have been a mainly down hill 20 mile journey. 70 mph long journeys usually result in about 52mpg.
Please with the performance, it isn't very quick, but is it very slow either.

Looks like I spoke too soon.
Car went into limp mode this evening coming home from work with the glow plug light flashing.

Scanned it with VCDS and got the following

1 Fault Found:
7563 - EGR Sensor 1
P046C 00 [101] - Implausible Signal
Not Confirmed - Tested Since Memory Clear
Freeze Frame:
Fault Status: 00000001
Fault Priority: 2
Fault Frequency: 1
Mileage: 0 km
Date: 2000.00.00
Time: 00:00:00

Readiness: 0000 0000

Seems to be fine now, so I've cleared the fault and will just wait and see what happens tomorrow.
Odd that the recorded mileage for the fault is 0

That's an appalling record, unless you use it as a race car!?

Shes totally fooked! Engine Management Light is permanent on, glow plug light starts flashing when the power is lost, ignition off and on again clears it for a while.

Will be getting her looked at tomorrow.

Wouldn't surprise me if it's one of the exhaust gas temperature sensors. These seem to be problematic on the 1.6 TDI CR. Hope they find what's wrong with it.

By the way, I have never seen the DPF light (40,000 miles) but have had two new exhaust gas temperature sensors when my car experienced a similar fault to yours. Never went into limp mode though.

I would feel embarrassed driving a Spark. At least they can do the work quickly, hope they've diagnosed the correct part first time.

Other than limp mode and dash lights, did your car experience any other symptoms?

Yes the Spark is a terrible car, but they're a combined Chevy/SEAT dealer and I guess it's cheaper for them to run a fleet of Sparks as courtesy cars, kinda glad too, if they'd gave me a Leon or Exeo lol I'd probably have traded the Ibiza in for one!!!

No other symptoms other than the warning lights and limp mode. Occasionally I thought there was a slight burning smell, but maybe the car was trying to do a DPF regen or something at the same time.

Don't think I'll be keeping the Ibiza long after its out of warranty. This has kinda knocked my confidence in it, and although it's the first problem I've had, im not surprised that its been exhaust related. I don't think modern diesels are worth the risk with all their DPF filters and sensors. My mileage has decreased a lot due to a new job, so i think i'd be looking at petrol in the future!

I'm of the same opinion Mark, I've not had a single issue with mine in nearly 40,000 miles but I am just a little nervous about keeping it beyond the warranty period.
What to replace it with is the BIG question?

Please tell me you were doing 55mph all the way else I'll cry!

I'm not stupid enough to tempt fate!

There's nothing, sensible at least, that catches my eye.
New A class merc looks nice, but that's silly money.
BMW 1series coupe but thats either a lot more money or a much older car
nothing else small hatchback size looks anywhere near as good as the Ibiza does, the A class isn't too bad looking and is only really on the wishlist because of the massive jump up in quality.

After driving an Astra bit back I rather fancy something that sorta size and comfort, but the Astra is dull as ditch water to drive, I've never liked the styling of the mk2 leon, the golf is pretty plain looking, and the focus is 10 a penny.

The Ibiza is fun to drive, well styled and not to expensive to run. All i want to do is find something that's all of those things and comfortable too

All cars get problems, the only way to avoid expensive bills is to keep a car that has a good warranty. However if reliability is of most importance, look no further than Japanese: Yaris, Micra, Jazz.. probably not  although the Suzuki Swift Sport is a bargain and very good. Don't expect more than 35mpg.
