1.8 20v Toledo - Workshop Guide Available?

Hi guys,

I've just bought a 1999 1.8 Toledo whilst my Supra takes it's winter nap!

The car needs the usual cam belt and water pump etc. It also needs a new speed sensor as it's not working at all and so isn't counting up the miles/speed etc.

I'm just wondering if there is any guides/links to doing these jobs? Particularly the cam belt. It's my understanding that the car is basically similar to a golf/bora? If so, which ones? This might make it easier to find a guide if necessary.

Cheers and thanks in advance for your help.

It is possible to get a mishmash of manuals to cover most things in the car. The mark 4 Golf manual is a good place to start particularly for the engines.

But I have found that ElsaWin covers everything you could possibly want, albeit in electronic form. You'll find copies on Ebay. Just one warning though, it doesn't work on certain versions of Windows (Windows 7 64 bit is a particular one).

Cheers for your replies gents.

So my 1999 1.8 Toledo has the same engine as the MK4 Golf? Or am I reading that wrong?

In other words, To work on my engine for my car I need the green Haynes 3727 manual?

I'm just basically interested in doing the cam belt. They're all typically the same, however I like to have something visual to refer to, just in case! I've tried to find someone who might have scanned in these pages or done a 'how-to' guide for this enghine type, but no luck so far.

Look up your engine code to be certain. It is stamped on the block along with the engine number on the edge of the bellhousing joint. Also on the build sticker which can be found in your service book or under the carpet in the boot of the car.

I'm assuming this is a Mk.2 Toledo, the one which had the boot removed to turn it into a Mk.1 Leon. 1999 is the first year of that model, so we can't be sure from date alone. If the whole of the boot and rear screen lift up for luggage access, its a Mk.1, which was based on the Mk.2 Golf platform.

I would expect a 1999 1.8 20V Toledo to have the AGN engine, so yes, you would need the green Haynes manual for Early Golf Mk.IV's

Thanks for your reply! I've checked everything over and it is indeed an AGN Engine. I've ordered the green Haynes manual as you recommended.

Really appreciate your help :)
