Hi all,

I am having problems with a 1.9 TDI 105. The symptoms are as follows:

- Lack of power (will only rev up to 3500rpm even when just started).

- Lots of black smoke and a horrible smell from the exhaust at all times (again, even when cold).

- When the engine is revved, the large black rubber pipe (120mm diameter) that runs up the left hand side of the engine is sucked together to the point where no air can get through.

- No whining squeezing from the turbo.

- No engine lights on the dashboard.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a blocked inlet pipe. Engine cannot pull in air required hence lack of power and smoke.

The turbo has probably collapsed and partially blocked the inlet.

Common issue on PD105 is complete turbo failure. Cr@ppy Borgwarner bv39-0022 in most cases.
Replace with Garrett 751851-5004S

This ^^ Just dealt with the exact same thing recently, turbo shaft split in two and blocking the intake. Exact same symptoms and all.

Thanks for the responses so far.
If it is the turbo that has cracked and blocked the inlet pipe, is there any way of testing this? For example by bypassing the turbo or by checking the pipe for a fragment of the spindle?

Take off a boost pipe to or from the turbo and feel the spindle, you'll soon know if it's kaput.
