Seriously looking at this. Anyone got any views or driving experiences with the 1.9tdi. The 2 litre is higher priced, is it worth shelling out the extra. Is the 1.9 a noisy beast like most car reviews state.

Hi Macca,
I took delivery of a 1.9tdi last week and having also driven the 2.0tdi I would say it all depends on the type of roads you will be driving on. If you travel regularly on busy motorways where the speeds get down to crawling speed the 1.9tdi is alot better for fuel economy but if you travel on country lanes and at speeds well in excess of the motorway speed limit go for the 2.0tdi. I was very surprised with the amount of torque on the 1.9, alot more than I expected and it pulls very well up steep hills. Yes it is alot noisier than the 2.0 as reviews suggests but only when pushed hard. Cruising along a motorway at 70 with cruise on it is very quiet.

I had a 1.9 as a courtesy car while my LC TDi was in getting fixed AGAIN and I was very surprised at how slow it felt, and it seemed very noisy even compared to mine. Think it sounds like an old diesel - rattley. I have no experience of the next gen 2.0 but word is the torque spread is better (mine feels like a real turbo - manic after 1500rpm) to make everything a but smoother and it's also supposed to be quieter than the 1.9. Given that the 1.9 I had sounded like a skeleton:w4nk: in a biscuit tin compared to my Mk1 then I would hope it is!

I have the 1.9TDI and it is a little noisy. A colleague has a 2.0 Altea and tbh I think I should have gone for the 2.0 over my 1.9. It's much smoother, and has a much better mpg than mine.

I get an average 42mpg, but my colleague regullaly gets 50's. I think a lot of it is down to gear ratio's, if I sit on the motorway at 70 the revs are at just over 2000, sitting at 80 and there up to 2500. the 2.0 has a 6 speed box, so a motorway cruise at 80 and the revs are right down at 2000.

My two pennys worth.
