I have a 1.4 2005 Ibiza sport. Do i have 1 or 2 cats on it? I've no idea what I'm looking at? I need a new one so shopping around for prices.

Thanks

Jack up the car and take a look, if you have an image to work with, you'll be able to narrow your search done. What is your engine code?

What source did you get the info from that your cat system is U/S from? Could they not have carried out a few checks to pin point the likely source of this problem? Guessing is not much good, though if you do replace a Lambda sensor, make sure that you buy a "good" one, ie either buy from VAG or equivalent prewired NTK sensor (like VAG use at factory).

When you look under the car, you might only see one cat, but the first cat is part of the manifold - so bear that in mind when looking under the car.

The AA guy plugged it in and came out with fault code po420 ? then said it was the cat. I am going to get lambda sensor first as it makes sense to check that before just changing the cat.

I just got a P0420 after fitting a complete new exhaust system. Turns out the post cat lambda is gubbed. So yes, I'd go there first. Much cheaper and easier to replace than a cat!

(I did need the exhaust anyway given the numerous holes :D)

No it doesn't.

Only 1 cat on any MK4 from the factory.

I am 100% sure mine has two as I have a small hole near one of them which can't be welded. I have been quoted £500 for a replacement exhaust system as it has 2 cats.

Well, yes it will have two cats, but, the first one is part of the manifold and should be separate from the rest of the exhaust. The original exhaust, as fitted at the factory, is one piece from the joint AFTER the manucat, in service, if the rear box fails, the rear section is cut at a specific point and the rear box replaced and a joining sleeve added. Now if the hole is in your rear cat, then I'd expect that the front section of this to be replaced and a joining sleeve fitted to allow it to get joined to the rear box. When the flexi joint in the front, just after the manucat failed yeares ago on my wife's 2003MY Polo 9N 1.4 16V, I got hold of repair flexi section and got it welded to the existing exhaust. That did not cost any where near £500. I'd reckon the weakest point in these exhausts is the flexi section, are you sure that that is not where the hole is in your exhaust?
