As muddy has said really, normally (from what ive read up on the problem when I suffered from it) its the vains sticking on the VNT turbo.

If its a boost leak, you might be able to here the leak, under revs or load, so might be worth checking the pipes, and giving it a few rpm's with the bonnet up incase you hear/spot anything out of place.

Isn't there a way that you can get the VNT vanes to cycle through its complete range while the engine is ticking over using VAG-com ?

Yes, but I can't remember how. The info is around somewhere, you'd have to dig it out with a search.

Re "we like people to do a search before doing pointless threads"...........I was making the point that it was possible to do that (for the sake of the guy that raised the original thread) it wasn't for me

I wasn't trying to make a point about searching :)
Just agreeing that the procedure you suggested is possible but that I couldn't remember how.

Thanks for all the info guys. I know a bit about diesels now. :)

The guy whose car I vag-com-ed has decided to put a new turbo on.

Out of interest, what turbo is he going for?

I had this error & while car was having MOT I asked the garage to cycle the VNT Vanes using vag.com, this they did but they also manually did it using a spanner apparently & they found some resistance to the vanes springing back.................however they "exercised" the vanes using the spanner & it now works perfectly...more responsive & last night I took it on the M3 incline where I usually get the error code & limp mode and now its just accelarating well past the 2800RPM that the error used to occur.
