So after a bang and smoke coming out from somewhere underneath the battery bay, my initial thought was the starter had shorted out or possibly the fan control module had shorted.

I get the glow plug light flashing when turning the key to the on position and when I try to turn the car over there is a click (doesn't turn over) and the alarm goes off.

I scanned with Vagcom and there is a large amount of errors:

Kline comms? Do you mean my diagnostics software (vagcom 3.11) or the car comms?

I think I have solved it. The error codes were due to the starter motor short circuiting and messing the electrics up.
I replaced the starter motor and then cleared the error codes, I still get excessive comm errors from block 8 and can't read 17, but I think Bill is right about it being my diagnostics comms.

pulling instrument cluster fuse can quieten down comms if wanting to talk to engine ecu only sometimes

Thats good to know for future reference. I got to the bottom of the comms issue and sucessfully read blocks 8 and 17 and they are cleared of errors. Ecu is now reading with no faults.

What was the issue in the end then? Having the same trouble, can't seem to find a solution
