2018 Leon Cupra 300 with intermittent, unusual engine noise

Thanks SuperV8, I have seen this one - I think I have scoured the whole web!
Engine ordered, so we're now waiting on that.
All this couldn't have come at a worse time, losing my job etc, I'm 52 with multiple kids / mortgage etc, so it's not like I am young and commitment free. I'm also the guy that all the neighbours smirk at when they see me cleaning my vehicles every weekend because they leave theirs to rot under dirt and they only service them when warning lights appear. I always thought, "look after your car and it will look after you." Clearly not on this occasion.
Not sure if I want to keep the car after this has all been sorted. I always thought these were bullet proof if you looked after them. I guess statistically it's unlikely to happen again with a different engine ... but ...
Maybe I should get a Caterham again and attach a trailer for the kids and dog when I need to cart them about.

When I first read this, I thought it can't be that much. Having looked into getting a new alloy this week and finding Seat want close to £1k for a single Cupra 300 alloy.........seems about right.

Haha - yes, I have a Dax Rush, but with two kids it's currently under a layer of dust and boxes in the garage! I've also wondered how I can take both kids with me
I reckon tasteful aftermarket ones would look best. I have already refurbed my diamond cut LC300 wheels once after Kwik Fit hashed them up installing new tyres (they paid for it). I have always planned to replace with aftermarket wheels if they were damaged again. Diamond cuts are a nightmare to keep nice.
Now, I am not sure if I will keep the car after it's fixed though.

When they get older it's easier as they tend to do their own things then. Don't sell it. Keep it for when they're older and don't need you to be Dad's taxi so much.
£7,638 and 6 pence later, it's back on the road with a lower mileage engine than the original. Turbo was inspected and was fine with no damage. Forgot how great the car was to drive. However, this has ruined my relationship with cars now.
Wow.. that’s a large bill…! Did they find out what went wrong with the original engine?
A piston cracked. At some point they will strip the old engine and try and find out what caused it. Will be interesting to know - but I'm probably going to sell the Cupra now anyway. However.... looking at other cars on the market, they are all shoddy, high mileage and expensive proportionately - maybe I should keep the Cupra.

These big events put a big crack (no pun intended) in your trust with regards to your car no doubt. I had the same after the gearbox failed from my Mercedes CLS55 AMG. After it was repaired, I got mini panic attacks all the time for all sounds the car made (except for the exhaust note) 
I was already planning on selling it, so after the big repair I sold it. I still have the mini panic attacks with regards to the gearbox in the Cupra, even though the DQ250 is a reliable unit (and I dont abuse it).

I bet that was expensive!
It was less than your engine job, but expensive nevertheless 
Paid about 5000 euro for complete gearbox overhaul including picking up the car from my home. The torque converter failed. Even though the 5 speed 722.6 gearbox is generally robust, 476bhp 700Nm from a stock engine are pretty crazy figures, especially in 2005!
