Hey,

Just changing my front discs. Does the calliper carrier need to come off to change the disc. Can't seem to get it off (not sure if it's just corrosion making it seem impossible!)

Quick responses welcomed! Sitting on the drive...

Hi, yep got it off. Well one bolt and loosened the other and swung it up. 21mm for anyone's future searching needs!

Another question. My pads have a wear sensor but I can't see one on the car anywhere. Does the lemon have a wear sensor? My old LCR did! Will just snip it off if not!

Got the rears started and found the discs were welded to the hub. Could not shift them at all!! Changed the pads and put it back together. Luckily there's no great lip so not too fussed. Get it another day. RBF600 to go in when I get a chance another day.
 
I would have hit the other end of the disc opposite the carrier and should get them free. A good tip for when you get the rear discs done is to put copper grease on the inside of the disc where it meets the hub, it should be easier to get free for next time.
 
just measured mine today while changing the tires, 23.6mm so i must prepare to change them also

not sure what brand to go with, are EBC discs any good?

Hi, yes... I know that this is good practice, however whoever changed the discs last before I bought the car obviously never did!

I tried to "stun" the rear disc from various angles but there's only one point, where the caliper sits, that the heat shield / cover doesn't obstruct the disc at the inside, and there just wasn't enough room to give it a good whack off. I didn't have access to a big enough torch to put heat into it either.

I'll take it into a garage for the rear discs at some other time I think!

My mate mentioned needing a special spline tool when he changed his Golf GTI rear discs... I'm not missing anything am I? They looked like ordinary calipers I've done 100 times before and the disc had a normal retaining screw so I assumed that was it, once the caliper was off I thought a wee whack et voila!?

The ones in the picture above are Mintex Discs (which I've never had trouble with on any car I've had in the past). Bought from Brake Depot. They they offer a service to Zinc coat and Groove/Dimple the Mintex parts.

Brake Depot came out cheaper for Mintex parts grooved/Dimpled and coated than the ebay places did for unbranded discs/pads of the same "style"

[:@] Most likely a dealer. Had this same exact issue on a Jazz, Both wheel and discs seemed welded to each other and hub. I had 2 spanners to undo the rear calipers and that was it for them.
 
Remove calipers much easier. Think you need an M11 spline bit but can't remember exactly.


I fully removed the rear caliper (without any spline tool lol - just 2x spanners) this mimics what my mate said about his GTi though... Perhaps a different rear setup. I had been confused about 255/286mm disc size for a while as some of the early PD170 FR's seemingly had 286mm rear discs. Workshops manuals also seems to list 3 dif types of rear caliper?!
