Finally got the LCR in for its 40K major service this afternoon.

Service cost was £70.44 at my local SEAT service centre.

This is because I replaced the following myself, saving on inflated parts cost and labour....

Oil and filter change
Spark Plugs
Cabin filter (pollen)
No air filter required as mine is washable

This cost me £77 to replace, so if the true cost is £147.44. Now thats a lot better than the Seat standard price of £289. A saving of £141 that about half the cost. And i used uprated plugs, and better oil.

About half way through the guy came out and said ' Did you know your brake lights are out mate' He said it needed a new pedal switch which would cost £44 inc fitting. I asked how much the switch was. ONLY £6!!! I told him I would fit it myself for that price.;)
Anyway it just seems strange as i can remember seeing my brake lights releflecting of another car just last night in my rear view. I think they have tried to pull a fast one as they werent making much off the service...

Thats pretty good. I am gonna be doing the same, doing most of the DIY jobs myself to save on servicing costs. My service is due at 37,000 but by my yearly mileage that is almost 18months away.

it sounds to me like you've done pretty much all of the service youself. what did they actually do or did you pay £70-odd for a stamp in the book? i've done all the servicing on my old motors but as my LCR is worth a bit more than a L reg mondeo i thought i'd keep the service stamps up to date.

I did replaced the parts listed above.

They performed all checks listed in the service schedule.. See post below..

So they replaced the coolant and brake fluid. Yes they stamped the book and provided receipt saying 40k service perfomed.

You did really well there, just rang my seat garage this morning and nearly fell of my chair when they wanted 280 for a service.

My local, which I trust so much more will do it for 110 with uprated plugs and oil.

I tried that at my local dealer - they wouldn't reduce the price as I'm charged for "30k Service" and not individual items. Lucky you. I have to pay for K&N filter cleaner, Synthetic oil, and full dealer service price, even though they don't change oil or filters, I do them myself.

If your not DIY enough to do it, like me, this comes down to where you want a deal stamp in your log.

Dealer - 280
Local back street - 100

I will take mine to a local back street and always have taken my cars there, trust them so much more, and know when I ask they will put in uprated parts and oil.

So how much more is a dealer stamp worth in the log book? 180 per stamp?

I used to do this with my old 306, and It used to cost me just 27 quid for basically a stamp in the sevice book.....

After one occasion they tried to tell me that one of my rear drums was leaking......and wanted ~300 to sort it !!

I said no thanks and checked it our when home and could see nothing....it needed a new MOT anyway - so after it passed at the test centre I mentioned what the garage had said about the brakes... the MOT guy said thats was complete bullsheet and there was nothing wrong with them....

What is it with dealers that they are so desparate to take your money that they give you a bunch of porkies !!

I don't think they'll have replaced the brake fluid at that price.

Yes you are right. Fluids just checked. So which service are these supposed to be changed on?
I will do the brake fluid myself in a few months when I fit new discs / pads.

I fitted the brake light switch (see top post) and saved nearly £40 there also. How they can charge £40 for fitting that is beyond me.

You're lucky their labour rates are so low!

My local stealer quoted me an hour's labour to replace the brake light switch at £85 + VAT. Total bill would have come to approx £110.

Ended up getting it fitted by a mate for £22 all in. That's £7 for the part and then £15 to buy him a crate of beer as a thank you!

It took me about 50 mins to fit, but that was taking it really easy as I had never done it or had no guidance. I recon 15 mins would be no problem.
£110 is obscene.
