Finally cracked 50 on the way back from work the other day:

You must work up a VERY big hill!

The most accurate way is to brim the tank each refill note the mileage covered and the fuel used.
of course it helps to be sure your trip is right (unlikely to be out by much) a change of tyre size could have an effect on accuracy.

I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking this

I understand that from time to time it's good to see what the car's capable of in terms of MPG - I had a relatively relaxing 40 miles drive home yesterday that consisted of 70% motorway and 30% A roads, and I achieved 38MPG on the trip computer.

But if MPG was that much of an issue I'd have bought a diesel or small engine petrol

You end up thrashing small engines though and doing about 20mpg.

'Economical' cars are only economical when you drive them like that. Drive normally and they're not that spectacular. And their MPG plummets when you have to give them more gas to overcome their lack of horsepower.

I was actually getting this from my LCR on Saturday. A few weeks after having my cambelt done it actually seems better on fuel not sure why that would be. I got 130 miles out of £20

I think I'll be a long time dead before I ever understand why people buy Cupra/R's and harp on about MPG and how far they can go on a tank.

If that's what you like to do then fine but I can't help thinking you're missing the point of the car somewhat fella ;)

What a stupid thing to say imo. So because you own an lcr you need to drive it around every day bouncing off the rev limiter? I don't poodle about watching the miles everytime I drive but it's nice to know the car can get good mpg should you need to go on longer trips.

There's getting good MPG and then there trying to get 600+ miles out of a performance car, not at any point did I say anyone should be redlining everywhere, but if you're hyper-miling you should have bought another car imo.

If you think what I've said is stupid then that's your opinion and that's fine, personally I think it's a fair point, each to their own, but because you don't agree doesn't make it stupid :)

So people are interested to see what they can get from a tank there missing the point in the car? So what's the point then to drive flat out everywhere and get the lowest mpg possible?

If MPG is something that interests you and you are in any way bothered about seeing what kind of mileage you can get then why not go for a frugal diesel car? If you buy a warm/hot hatch why would you be interested in getting 50+mpg and not using the turbo? I just don't understand why some people are fussed about it.

I never said anything about driving the car flat out anywhere, all I said was why hyper-mile a performance car, it makes no sense to me.

If you can explain it to me then maybe I'd understand why, but from my point of view it just doesn't make sense, sorry.

but for you to find out in how well a 'turbo' petrol car can run with good mpg then its obvious you have brought the wrong car, dont buy a petrol turbo car to ask yourself in how well a car dose to the mpg,i mean really? Buy a derv:confused:
if it makes you feel better I got 20mpg yesterday but sure I didn't buy the car to think I wonder how well it dose on mpg,i brought my van for that and even then its not all that tbh.
I was once looking at skylines the r33s and ppl still question whats the best mpg.......
Christ your waste more petrol cooling and warming up the turbo

Lmao Another one I'm not bothered about how much petrol it uses it's just nice to know you can get decent mileage out of it. Can't be bothered trying to explain it.

Done a few cross country trips in mine just cruising and averaged 42mpg comfortably however when im on track I average about 8mpg to make up for it

I can understand getting decent mileage on a run driving the car something like normal so the figure has some meaning, but to drive it in such a way that you barely ever touch the throttle is giving an irrelevant figure, unless you drive like that all the time what's the point? And nobody would drive it that way all the time or they'd never get where they were going lol.

Isn't this just a bit of a friendly competition to see who can get the most MPG? Nobody is saying they drive like a granny all the time!
