Well, I normally park my car in gear, even on a slight slope, because my head is in bits at the mo, I left it in neutral and thought i'd set the handbrake, so got out of the car and it was fine, came back out of the house 20 min later and my car had gone!!!

some bloke came running up saying was it my car in his wall.....
The car had rolled down a very slight slope on the road, off the pavement, crossed the road, missed a parked car and bollard, mounted the curb and crashed into a wall [:@]
I feel so stupid and irresponsible, really felt like the handbrake was set and only think iv'e not set it well enough. As I said I always leave it in gear as well, just not today. not much damage to wall, but look at pics.

Exactly 1 month old today.

Any ideas on costs people? Need help on this, it would be very much appreciated. Insurance excess is £400
bumper obviously scraped badly, wing has been pushed up and out by the bumper and headlamp is scratched. Dont think theres any broken brackets.

not sure if it is a new bumper and wing jobby, depending on how the bumper and pannel have hit. Either way defo a boddy shop job mate.

Anyway unlucky mate, could have been much worse though. On a diffrent story a mate of mine didnt put his hand brake on properly like you and came out and his had rolled into a river. So as said could have been worse.

how is the mans wall cos that is another expense. if you go through the insurance they will replace the bumper wing and headlight as it will be cheaper than paying the labour to get them repaired.

i'd say the guts of £700-800 - no need for a new headlight (depedant on damage) but wing may need replaced.

Depends on if/how much your premium will change if you claim - perhaps a call to your insurance.

if it were me I would probably not go through the insurance. However it has 2 be said unless I wrote my car off I would not be going through the insurance. O heres a quick question right if say my timing belt goes on the car and the engine is unrepairable would the insurance pay out?

Albeit at mates rates but I got a new wing fitted and painted for £200 and the misses got the corner of her bumper painted for £100, Id aim for around £400. It doesnt look that bad really. These things happen.

The wing maybe saveable as its only been pushed up - crack any paint on it though?

Again the bumper is repairable, some handy sanding and then body work filler can bring that back looking new. (i know this as the missus has her bumper scraped like that when some berk at work reversed into her- that cost about 120 all in.)

Go and get your quotes and then decide. I'm assuming your in the "risky driver" catagorey for insurance so even though you pay 400 quid now your renewal will be pretty high with a claim on it.

My worst nightmare that is... the car rolling off; i've seen a car roll onto a busy dual carrage way in durham once whilst getting fuel **** my pants thought the truck was gonna total it and then crash into the petrol station..

Chin up old bean you always fear these things happening but theyre not as bad as all that really - 4 weeks down the line you'll be zoom zooming around.

Oh btw if you do decide to go through insurance make it worth ya while... If you know what I mean ;)

How does the handbrake work on an Ibiza? Is it that its on the discs and as they contract when cooling down it reduces the effect of the handbrake and therefore could lead to a car moving on a slope (ie bad design?)

spot on with that, if you only put the hanbdrake on one or two clicks the car can roll after the rear brakes have cooled and contracted

the insurance would only pay out if the cam belt failure was to do with accident damage (inner wing jamming into it) or in my case some moped handlebars stuck into it (don't ask, there was a thread about this but it seems to have vanished ?)

so with that sort of damage it would be an uneconomical repair methinks

I never use the ratchet on the handbrake; I was always taught to pull it up with the button depressed so that a) it doesn't make a horrible noise and b) you can be sure you've pulled it on properly. Is this just me...?

Sorry to hear about your car though, must be gutted :(

see what the handbook says - if it doesnt say anything about that then might be worth a nasty letter to SEAT UK telling them of this design flaw........

yeah I hear what you're saying about not using the rachet,
in my company car i tend to just yank it on and that has ofer 100k on the clock and the rachet still works fine
although these days the rachet's are not as fine as they used to be
older cars that I have had used to have about 6 fine clicks before the brake was on, I will admit that if you yank it 6 clicks really fast it sounds bad

I don't find 3 clicks over a 2 second timeframe a horrible noise on my FR

No, not unless the car was stolen and it broke then.

Cheers for the replies everyone. Feel a bit better now, especially when i gave it some beans afterwards :) Glad it was a closed road. Out of about 5 trajectories it picked the best one for least damage. If my steering lock was on, it wouldnt have turned right and woulda rolled down the rest of the steepening hill and woulda been a smouldering mess at the bottom

I think thats what happened with the rear brakes cooling, as obviously i didnt put it on enough, but it didnt move when i got out of it...

My car has rolled a couple of times. once i was in the house went out to my car and it had disappeared, looked down the road and it was resting against the curb, was lucky as there were no cars in the way. Then i was at a mates stood talking to him on his drive and it just rolled away in front of me. Needless to say i always leave it in gear now!!!!
