Hi all,

So my sister's 1.2 62 plate Seat Ibiza air con is having troubles. I noticed that when you press the AC button it does not turn on / light up until your put the.blower speed on fan speed 4. Whilst it is running if you drop it down to 3 or any other speed for that matter it will cut out all together. You ca. Only get the AC to work on speed 4. The normal heater.blower works on any speed as it should bit ac will on work on speed 4.

Any ideas?

Thank you

That is the classic symptoms for a failed "hedgehog" resistor pack - assuming that the fan is not really running on the other speeds, maybe listen to see if you can actually hear the cabin "heater" fan running on the lower speeds, I'd doubt if it is.

Edit:- maybe also remove the pollen filter, with the ignition off, to see if that filter is clean, that there is no accumulated rubbish in the fan housing and finally check while the ignition is off that you can freely rotate the fan.

The AC is programmed not to be able to run unless the fan is running as if it could, it would freeze up the evaporator.

Another Edit:- you can buy really cheap replacements via ebay, but many of them will sort this issue out right away, but probably not have a long service life - though that is true for the genuine VW Group parts and the OEM's part - maybe Valeo, but if the bearings have "stiffened up" on that fan motor, then the next "hedgehog" resistor pack from any source will have a very short service life due the extra load/heat dumping.

When the fan resistor fails the fan will only run in the fast speed as this is the default setting not connected to the resistor, new resistor required I’d say.

The resistor packs have a thermal fuse across the supply which is the part the fails.
Replacing the fuse will sort the pack.
I've replaced a few of there's for friends, if you can solder it's an easy task and the part costs a pound

I'd think that there is normally a primary "situation" that causes these fuses to "pop", not investigating and sorting that out might cause another disappointment a few days/weeks after replacing the fuse.

Out of interest, mainly for others benefit, what is rating of the thermal fuse.

Something important you have to ask yourself is why the fuse got too hot.
It's a combination of not enough airflow and too much current.
So it can be obstructions, dust for example or the fan motor drawing more current than it should.
