Looking for a little bit of advice guys about a clutch noise I seemed to have developed now.

When the clutch is pressed in the noise disappears and then the clutch pedal is out, the noise reappears. It's like a buzzing noise, and it's noticeable when driving in 1st and 2nd gear.

I'm not having any issues with the clutch slipping, or gears crunching at all.

My issue is my cars out of warranty now, and before getting it checked out I was just wondering what it could possibly be?

Thanks for you're time everyone!

could well be the thrust bearing either dry or knackered, don't suppose you happen to sit in queues or at traffic lights with it in gear and your foot on the clutch do you?

90% of my driving is on the motorway in 5th. When I do come to traffic lights if I'm sitting for more than 20 seconds then ill let it out of gear.

I'm not the first owner so it's possible that its been treated like that in the past and that's why it's went so fast.

Is it an expensive fix? Thanks.

Not going to be cheap, they will fit a new clutch while they have it to bits(got to split gearbox and engine anyway)Don't know what it will cost in garage as I always do my own repairs , but clutchkit will be over 100 quid, then fitting etc

i had this problem, i went to my seat dealer and they checked it out, they said it was a double bearing.
i had it fixed on warranty, i dont know if it was relative to the clutch (they didnt say so) but it is just two bearings that sit along side each other in the housing of the gearbox which run rough. i was told it was a common problem with my model of engine/gearbox on many of the VAG cars (i have the 1.6 petrol).

It is a good idea to get it checked out because if it is a double bearing issue then this roughness can put a heavy load on the gearbox and clutch, because it is a known problem the bearings they will replace will be slightly different and prevent the bearings from failing again. Once i had mine sorted i forgot how smooth my ibiza used to be. i really recommend you get it checked :)

Thanks for all the help everyone.

Have the car booked in for Thursday into a local SEAT garage. Hope it isn't too expensive as its out of warranty now!

when you get something back, could you let us know what it was

Will do. I'm hoping if this is a common issue with this engine/gearbox then hope they may do something about the price. I'm sure I read on here a while back someone else had this issue, may have been yourself. Will update all on Thursday!

Thought I'd give a quick update.

It's supposedly the clutch release bearing. But they can't confirm without removing the clutch first. They said if its the clutch release bearing then they would charge for a replacement clutch around £500 but if its the gearbox bearings then this would be a free of charge repair even though its out of warranty, but problem is they don't know this until they strip it.

So it's either I tell them to strip it, find out its the clutch and get charged £500 or go elsewhere.

Did you have the same issues, like the noise would appear when the pedal was released? And then when you push down on the clutch pedal the noise disappears. Only really hear the buzzing noise in 1/2nd gear?

Cheers Ole.

if you sit with it in gear and your foot on the clutch, the release bearing is spinning all the time and it burns the bearing out.

yes, i had that exact problem, your not alone. Once the work is done you will realise just how smooth your car felt before. i had the problem in neutral 1st and 2nd any time i lifted the clutch but once it was sorted i fell in love with my car all over again.

it is definitely worth the work because the new bearing they will fit is a new revised model that solves the quick wearing problem.

Yeah problem is they don't know until the gearbox is split and checked. So it may be a £500 repair or it may be free of charge.

I can get a clutch myself and get it fitted for around £290 that's the problem. So it's either I get one fitted myself, or get seat to fit it and hope it may not be the cutch bearing but the gearbox bearing which would be free.

Ah ok. fingers crossed its the bearing then, but i think it will be ;)

So things get from bad to worse.

Replaced the clutch (3 piece clutch kit including a new bearing) and the noise is still there.

Happens when in neutral and clutch pedal is out, and then happens in first and second.

I called my local seat garage and asked them for advice, as it was them who said it was more than likely the clutch release bearing and now it's not. They said they would need to strip the gearbox and check the gearbox bearings now, and if it is in the gearbox then this would possibly be covered under a quality program as my car is now out of warranty.

Problem is now, do I keep firing money at the car when it's only 3 and a half years old, or do I just cut my losses and get another car? Seat said its around a 2 hour job just splitting the gearbox, and if it isn't covered then this would be at least £270 for them just to look at it due to the time involved.

For anyone reading, advice would be helpful, as just now I am looking more towards the new car route. I only have around 5 months left on the finance then the car is mine.

Thanks.

Was it the dealers who replaced the clutch ? - if YES - then i would be demanding they sort out the problem at their cost.

These guys are suposed to be the specialists on the car - to keep fitting parts and charging the customer for them is NOT and acceptable diagnostic technique !!!!!!!!

I decided to get the clutch replaced myself DEAN0. It was a third party clutch (Valeo). But a VW garage fitted the clutch for me, but they didn't have anything to do with the noise as I just wanted them to fit it.

I went on the advice of the Seat garage who said on the paperwork 'suspect issue is with clutch release bearing'.

Thats a pitty. I know a guy who successfully argued his case with a dealer who kept changing things to fix a problem and charging him for the pleasure of doing it.

If you pay a so called professional to do a job it is unacceptable that they just keep replacing bits until the fault vanishes.
