Hi all, so i had my 14 plate 2.0 tdi fr in the garage to address its coolant leak thats been driving me nuts. I fitted a brand new coolant bottle and cap from tps, this didn't solve my issue, I have seen a lot on the water pumps going so was kind of expecting it, and after collecting the car today the garage are pretty certain it's the water pump.. I know its common practice to change the timing belt and I'm happy to do that seeming my cars sitting at 102k now lol. I want some advice on where I can buy the correct kit for my car from, as I want to save a bit of cash by getting the parts myself which I normally do with anything I get fitted, because there is variants in kits does anybody know what specific timing belt and water pump kit id need and if so where is best to buy... I know a guy who uses tps but I'm having some time off work so won't see him for a few weeks and don't really want to wait that long. Any suggestions, ideas will be much appreciated as I don't want to purchase the wrong kit if I'm just paying my garage labour.

Hope it makes sense lol, thanks in advance

I've been quoted £410 all in with dealer parts or £50 to £60 less for eurocarparts etc. Labour is £200.

Just to clarify are you saying £410 for just parts with £200 labour on top? If so you are over paying. I paid £500 at a independent vag specialist. Think seat dealers charge £600. Or if you are saying £410 all in including labour, that’s a decent deal mate.

Haha, I didnt make much sense did I, sorry its 410 including the Labour, which I know isn't too bad tbh, I like buying the parts myself as atleast I know what is been fitted to my car lol. I'm a bit strange like that haha. Cheers guys

Eurocarparts is normally my go to tbf, I just didn't want to get the wrong kit for my car haha... I'm thinking to get the garage to supply the parts as I'm planning on a full service at the same time plus want my gearbox oil changing aswell and a full coolant flush out plus pads and discs all round.. going to cost but will be worth it as she's my daily driver/ work horse haha

I'm sorry but paying £410 to save money is rather daft. You're not saving much, a dealer job is about £500, and if you get it done by Seat you get a five-year warranty.

I wasn't on about paying £410 to save money, I was wanting some ideas on where I could buy the parts myself to save on the cost that way, so knocking some off the £410, Seat by me is £599 for the cambelt kit and water pump, and a few local dealers and vw specialists are around the same price. Im getting it in for the timing belt and water pump, full service, gearbox oil change and discs and pads all round and I'm guessing it will only be about 100-150 more then seats 599, so I'll probably just go for it lol.

One thing I feel about car repairs, and I do most of that sort of work on my own cars, if anyone came to me to sort out their car, I'd be demanding that I bought the parts, that way I'd know that any issues with getting wrong parts would be on my head.
In my world, if you know not much about actually working on cars and think that it is smart to do the parts sourcing yourself and then handing the car over to someone to fit them - then you are taking the ownership of a large part of the risk associated with that task, and could end up paying a lot more in the end.

As said getting SEAT to do that sort of job removes all the risk and would work just fine for me.

I wish I had the tools, space and time to do the work myself, I used to do most of the work on my previous cars in all fairness, ill be honest I wouldn't attempt doing my timing belt, I always leave that to the garage, I agree with you that it is a risk you take getting parts yourself, think that's why I am just going to get the garage to supply the parts, ive been assured it will be dealer parts used alongside the coolant and parts for my service. So not a cheap **** kit.

Strange how VW’s fixed price servicing is the cheapest for cam belt and water pump £549 - only 2 yr warranty vs 5 at Seat:

If there is a VW dealer near to the Seat dealer you get Seat to price match it.

My mechanic used TPS and sourced whatever they said suited the car. It might have been a Gates kit.

Ref the water pump - I had the stupid electronic shroud/widget thing on mine fail and got one fitted without it.

The plastic thermostat housings are also known to crack and leak. Had that replaced as well.

Or you have the dreaded blocked heater matrix mysterious coolant loss. Had that done as well!

Had my timing belt, fan belt and water pump done by the garage, that plus a full service and gearbox oil change, cost £635.:)

My heater matrix was replaced last January, solved my half and half heating, only for about 3 months then went back to drivers side been luke warm lol. I'm getting it in for my mechanic to check the heater control flaps I think there called, that will be in the new year now, but I think it will need the matrix changing again, tbh I'm just going to get it done as im not confident that the garage I used for my matrix last year flushed the system out properly.

I did the matrix myself as it's not too bad if you're DIY orientated. I didn't flush the system as it does need pumps & tools that allegedly only VAG group garages have (not sure that is the case). I just got my mechanic to dump as much coolant as he could when he did the pump and t/stat housing. I do think it's a bit hit and miss whether you properly purge the system and/or get all of the crud out.

Mine has been good for over 18 months and I'll get the coolant changed again early next year when it has a full service.
