:help: This morning on the way to work i thought i was gonna be the owner of a burnt out Toledo!!!
i thought i could smell Castrol R, and with a moped in front, and knowing the different additives you can add to fuel didnt thik anything of it, UNTIL I HAD SMOKE POURING OUT OF THE CENTRAL AIR VENTS!!!!!!!! WTF!!!!

Pulled over opened windows and turned the Air Con off, smoke dissipated and nothing seemed to be burning anymore!.......opened bonnet and nothing on fire.........apparently the belt that drives the aircon unit also runs the power steering pump Therefore powers of deduction point to the air con pump/compressor as the steering is fine.....

can anyone confirm this from experience......or could it be something else.....carried on to work no problem, NOT gonna turn the A/C on til i get home and we can look at it!
any idea on cost to replace it????:censored:

Hiya Sam,

I think you'll be looking at around £300 for a reconditioned one, or failing that £700+ from VW  . Was there any banging noise or sudden drop in temp before the aircon started chucking out smoke, how has the aircon been over the past week or so. The clutch went on my other halfs Aircon pump about two years ago, which resulted in having to get a new pump etc. Well that was until the car writen off in an accident on the way to collect the bits. Might be worth having a chat with a couple of breakers yards as well.

cheers for your help guys...i did have a quick look on Mk IVS but missed that thread....Before the prob there was no bang or lack of coldness from the vents, just this steady increase in "burning oil" smell.........and then a smokey discharge from the vents.......

Got home and gingerly turned the A/C on, It started up and even blew cold air.....after a few minutes, the Castrol R smell returned, but not as strong......we put the fans on full then reduced them and there appears to be nothing wrong with it now......
I dont get it

used it all the way to work this morn, and no hint of the problem yesterday.....gonna get it serviced and recharged methinks!
