Is it possible to buy a dimming rear-view mirror to retrofit. Will it just be a case of unscrewng the current mirror and bolting the new one on or is there a lot of wiring that needs to be done?

I don't personally know, but there was a tutorial on fitting an Audi mirror (with the electronic compass display) on www.golfmkv.com I seem to remember.
The dimming mirror works independently of the lights so I would assume it just needs power... And there is power up there already for the interior light.
