Air Con not cold

The air con in my 2008 cupra just blows out warm air. I bought the car last year from a main dealer and they said that they had recharged the air con (word of Mouth) it worked perfectly and was very cold. Now this year the air con is blowing warm air. The car is just has two weeks left of its warranty so if it has lost the charge over a year (assuming it was charged) or just needs a recharge would that be part of the warranty or will they charge me.

I know when my Megane air con stopped working Renault said they would recharge for free if a leak was found, surprise surprise they did not find a leak and charged me £80.

You probably have a leak. Did they give proof that it was actually regassed last year?

It's a bit odd that the aircon in a barely 3 year old car has stopped working so soon, even if it hasn't been used at all (which I would expect it has).

My first car was a T reg (1999), I bought it at the beginning of 2008 and the aircon was still on the original gas and was ice cold.

Just had the same thing on my 2008 K1

Hadn't used the air con over the winter and when we had a bit of warm weather the other week the air con was blowing cool(ish), not cold, air.

Happened to be passing a local garage and popped in to let them have a look.
After 3 hours they found that it had no gas in the system and they found a leak.

The short story is... £151 +VAT just for the part direct from Seat.
This was the pipe that has the valve on the top. I think it was the hose that
comes directly from the air con pump
Quite a long piece of pipework as it goes. It was leaking just under the valve.

In me experience and understanding the system typically loses 15-20% of the gas every year, so for it to be blowing warm air one year after blowing cold says there IS a leak.

My old Astra had a leak (took about 3 days for the air con to go from cold to hot after regassing) and Vauxhall simply kept regassing the system as my warrenty was due to expire. I took it back every week for 4 weeks or so until they finally diagnosed the condensor and replaced it. They told me it would of cost £450 after my warrenty had expired.

There are guidelines/laws for air con regassing and one of them is that it is illegal/wrong/not allowed to re gas a system that you know to have a leak of any kind. I informed Vauxhall of this, which is when they decided to play fair.

I'm sure a trip to the dealer will resolve the problem, but your warrenty expiring soon bought back what happened to me.

Do you not all leave the system in auto so the air con is given a workout regularly?

Always done this and never had an issue, and I've had my current Leon since new for nearly four years now.

When on Eco it will only increase cabin temp. It will not lower. It has to be on auto to cool car or lower your temp on controls to LO. On LO it will only blow cold.

Sorry my last reply may have been confusing, most of the time my Air Con is on Eco, i do this to save fuel and not put extra strain on the engine by running the compressor. I realise that the Eco will stop the car getting cooler than ambient.

Its when on Auto and i want the aircon on that It doesn't get any cooler when it should.

Having it on Eco most of the time is probably the reason your air con doesn't work now, sadly.

We had a failure of the air con on our 08 plate Reference Sport, was just over a year old. Colliers (where we had car from) wanted to charge to look at it and would only do it under warranty if there was a " faulty " part.:wtf: Missus took it to Central Seat they did it all under warranty was a pressurre sensor , apparently.

I had to change the High Pressure sensor on mine too.

My AC wasn't very cold either so took it for a Regas, when I got back home I could hear a hissing sound. Turned out it was the HP sensor, had I of not got it regassed I'd of never known. So I got a new part from David@Sere, fitted it and went back for another Regas. Works fine now. But as rllmuk says, you should use it often to keep the pump lubricated. I have read of loads of Golfs needing new pumps which are expensive to replace.

I think the sensor was just over £40 and was easy to fit, it has a Shraeder valve underneath it so no gas can be released when swapping it.

Car went into seat yesterday and I was expecting a bill for a re gas but they found that the pressure valve was faulty. Replaced and re gassed under warranty. Nice and cold now, shame the sun has gone in lol.

Not sure of the price as it was under warranty but I think they are about 40 quid plus fitting plus a regas which they had quoted me 60 quid.
So I guess around £140

Just wondering if any of you got any error codes in vagcom when you did a scan to tell you the pressure valve was faulty?
It's just when I had mine serviced last Oct at a dealer they did an Air con service at the same time. . .
Didn't really use it much over winter as well you don't need it do you!
Anyways come to use it now and it's warm!
Did a scan with vagcom and I get the error 00229 - refrigerant pressure - 002 lower limit exceeded. .
Surely there must be a leak for it to fall this low?

I would say faulty leaking pressure switch if it was re gassed last year as it seems to be a common fault, is your car under warranty. Didn't check vagcom, it would be interesting if it does show up on that

No I'm not under warranty any more, although I would ask them that it was checked when it was serviced.

I was just wondering if anyone knew if any codes were thrown up in vagcom regarding their faults, otherwise may have to get it injected with dye and re-gas, then let it all leak out, find out where from and fix. . which seems expensive :( Think it may be the only way though. . .

On another note has anybody tried the cans from Halfords. . .they say they are meant to fix leaks, but one of them at around £20 also has red dye in it which may help. . .Has anyone tried this?

Thanks :)
