I personally wouldn't waste your money on a carbonio type filter like the one in the link as you will see little gains because you still have the restriction of the standard air box. You would be best off spending a little bit more on a CAI that replaces the whole engine cover such as the Forge TwinTake, ITG, Dbilas or BSH. You could probably pick up a second hand one for a decent price too. I may be looking to sell my k04 fitment Dbilas soon, but i'm still undecided.

It's a copy of a Carbonio intake, maybe available cheaper. However its not an intake in the true sense of the word.

It's a cold air intake but it 'doesn't' replace the cars stock airbox as the fleabay ad seems to convey, it just supplements it a little and gives the car a small amount of induction roar, but not much.

You would probably find you'll gain just as much improvement from a K&N or Green panel filter. That would cost you around £45 at most.

If you want a real induction kit with a real performance improvement, I would look at a proper intake, it would cost upwards of £300 but it will do far more than a Carbonio could.

Are there any similar variants to this item on sale or a direct replacement from another VAG that would be a cheaper option?

You can get a BSH kit for 150 pounds like this.

Yeah the BSH kits seem to be a very popular choice over in the states. One of the first intakes to have a correctly scaled maf housing too i believe.

I have the green cotton filter already. My theory would be if there wasnt the gaping hole below the intake pipe would the engine not benefit from better air flow? sorry im quite new to the tuning scene

You mean the hole in the scoop that mounts to the grille? I don't think it makes much difference tbh. You could try blanking it off but your still going to be left with the restrictive engine cover anyway. Another member tried modifying his intake, take a look at here.

I run the Carbonio on mine but I paid something like £130 for it which I thought was expensive for what it is, they seem to have gone through the roof since 2007.

It certainly makes some difference, I noted a little more torque but no power increase once fitted shown on a rolling road. The panel filters they come with are the sponge type and I don't really rate them.

So if you bought it just for the carbon intake part, I would keep the Green panel filter in place.

Seems a hell of a lot of money now for very little gain. I have a Dbilas intake which gave upwards of 20hp over the stock airbox. However I've gone back to the stock airbox for the moment as I'm considering my options on upgrading to a better more suitable intake.

The Dbilas has some question marks over its design for safe MAF readings as do some other intakes. The BSH appears to be another option but not sure I like the fact its zip tied onto the engine.

Where can you get that from?
Is it made to fit the Cupra or is it for VWs?

Thanks,

Well my little grasshopper.

The intake in this pic is fitted to a cupra, however it is not a dedicated k04 kit, but instead made for the k03 as found in the FR and GTI. Buttttttt, this is only the 2nd full CAI that uses the correct maf housing size for the majority of software out there, and is easily adapted to fit the k04 cars.

Any further questions click this link, sign up and ask cuprak1, hes a nice friendly chap willing to always help. ;)

The zip tie is a personal choice. The BSH kit does actually come with an attachment bracket to that piece, however after cuprak1 saw this pic he decided to ditch the bracket for a cable tie!

JEEEEZ! how on earth has that happened, it's a pretty chunky bit of metal! My neuspeed is attached to this and it is a solid as rock! Looks like it'd need a big force to snap that!?

The stock engine mounts allow a great deal of forward/backward momentum. It could well be if the bolt was over-tightened with no or little play (a washer is always worth fitting). Then the movement under hard acceleration can be enough to tear the bolt from the alloy mount.

I have an up-rated dog-bone mount fitted that drastically reduces this momentum. My Dbilas while it was fitted was fixed to the same mounting point and we used an alloy bolt and washer and left some movement/play in the mounting point. Theory being an alloy bolt is more likely to fail before a steel bolt, which would tear its way off the mount as its alloy itself.

Needless to say mine didn't break, but then my engine doesn't swing about now like a washing machine on spin cycle.

What do you really want to get out of it ??? That is really the question you should ask yourself. Better performance ? Looks ? Both ?

This Carbon Airbox, as I use myself (Oettinger) gives just a very little extra. It is sold together with an ITG Sport Filter, here in Holland. This set-up has been measured on a Dyno ( J.D. Engineering ). It gives less than 5 H.P. ( Dutch Horse Power ).

For better performance, look at all the filters mentioned. The standard has to come out. All of it.
As far as I know, there are no cheaper options. But what I learned really, is that you cannot save on money and increase on power. Tuning is a very expensive hobby. Especially when you get it done right. Don't try to save money. Try to win power, or don't do anything at all. That is my humble opinion. ( Looks are great by the way ) ...
