hi guys,

new to this, so here we go. ive had my 2001 leon cupra 20vt for about 5 months, running and driving like a dream etc... but recently, when starting car up from cold, there is like a loud exhaust blowing noise coming from engine bay... if you sit and wait in car for a couple of minutes it goes away and doesnt come back until next day? it drives alright and i dont lose pressure on boost. any ideas what this could be? ive checked most of the pipes for leaks and cant see anything.

thanks
nathan

On a cold start they are noisy to begin with anyway as im sure you noticed, so it could be a small hole at the manifold or downpipe, have you had a look to see if any smoke is coming out of somewhere it shouldn't! Failing that you can still have a small leak and it wont affect your boost that much! You can leak test it if you can find a garage that does it. In the mean time check all the boost pipes and vac lines for splits and make sure none have popped off.

hey slimsLCR
thanks for reply, would those air leak test be expensive at garage?
no smoke comes from engine or behind car, and because ive got a exhaust system, i cant hear much as such.
best way to describe the noise is like a hoover, and sounds like a hoover being turned off..
:/

Not really, can be anywhere from 20-50quid depending on the garage! Worth doing anyway, leaks are a common problem on these cars. The only thing I can think of that sounds like a hoover when you turn it off is the radiator fan! Your temp gauge hasn't been playing about has it?

if cold start, secondary air would be running...
if the valve is stuck open (they corrode) or the vac lines to it are split it wont open, so the exhaust port can free vent and/or the fan blow into a closed valve.. makes quite a racket

smoke test ftw btw

As an owner of the same car I can tell you its the secondary air pump. Its coming from the pipe which is at the side of the air filter. Do you have an open cone filter ? If it sounds too loud. Which mine did last week its probably a split pipe on the PVC system. Check them carefully for splits. Its easy to check yourself. If you can't find a split pipe then I'd suggest a smoke test. Are you local? I'll help you out.

Yeah apparently the SAI is useless after so many years. If I could rip mine out I would but not read into it to be honest.

Surrey is a bit far like lol.

Did you manage to find a split pipe? Honestly there the only problems I have with my cupra.
