Afternoon people,

It's been a while, too much other stuff going on to give the car much attention recently! A couple of weeks ago I noticed the airbag light was on all the time. I got VAGCOM out and plugged it in and it said it was an intermittent fault with the airbag igniter on the drivers side, can't remember the code now.

Does anyone have experience of this problem? I believe they are under the seats? What does the igniter look like? Is it a straight swap etc?

As my car seems to have also recently redeveloped a leak on the drivers door, I wouldn't be at all surprised if it's due to water damage. On that subject can anyone suggest how to remove old butyl strip? It is the proper stuff, not the standard stuff that just disintegrates.

The ignitor will be part of the airbag assembly itself or at least attached to it. It's the crash sensor that you're thinking about, thats the thing under the seat. You can always save a copy of the codes for later reference with vagcom. If i was you i would get it sorted as if the ignitor is faulty then it either won't go off in a crash, or worst case will go in in your face while driving!

If it is the side impact sensor, easy to change - lift up the carpet in the footwell - it's held in with two Allen key bolts - unplug and plug replacement in, clear fault code.

Make sure you keep battery disconnected whilst working on it.

If you get a second Hand sensor it will have to be from same car otherwise it won't work.

Cheers, I'll have a look on VAGCOM again and get the carpet up. Mty12345, that was my fear, I'm not driving it much at the moment though as I've recently got a diesel commuter wagon for through the week.

BigJohn84, cheers for that, I already know how to do the seals though its getting the stuff off again I'm struggling with! Hellish sticky stuff!

777cupra, are you meaning that it has to come from another mk1 leon?

Yeah mate, best get it back on vagcom asap.

If the code is for the airbag crash sensor under the seat, then you have no danger of it going off without having a crash, it just wont go off if you do have one.

The ignitor is a different story, thats the code you need to worry about as thats the thing that could cause it to go anytime if there is a short circuit somehow. The ignitor isn't under the carpet if that is the fault....... it's part of the airbag unit in the steering wheel.

It has a number on the side which matches up to the airbag control module - I spent ages looking for one with same number but luckily one from same engine coded car worked - if that makes sense.

I've got a few airbag sensors hear if you give me the number I'll see if I have one that you need, if you need any parts for your car let me know and I'll see what I have.

I've had the same fault, but on the passenger side, been told by a VW garage all air bags are deactivated while the air bag light is on.

Good info though, thanks guys
