just to see if the g/s flow rate increases at all with a smoothed box.

I'll google and have a look.
 
the turbo will suck air so none will be lost through the holes.. it would suck in some warmer engine air.. not that it really matters as the turbo will super heat the air anyway before it goes off to the intercooler.

you wont see a BHP increase as such but over the stock air filter it might feel more responsive.

main reason people change is for noise. if drilling holes gives the desired effect and isnt introducing unfiltered air then youve saved a few quid.
 
is the sound noticable with drilled holes! at the moment iv got a pipercross panal filter with a new air feed and a forge dv! did have some holes in the box but coverd them up coz i was worried about air loss! but as you guys seem to think that it wont make ne difference thought i might try and get some good sounds out of it instead! was thinkin of replacing it all with a cone filter! and see what i think!

right ok went and got this little beauty today took all of about 3mins to fit. left the bottom half of the origanl air box in for the time being mainly coz the cold air feed is attatched to it but most of all cos i ran out of time! it sounds good and there is certainly abit more poke in the old girl! must admit gave it a few revs when there was no filter on and bloody hell what a great sound it makes! oh well plz with the change for the mo will c how i get on!

J@mes did log's on his when he modded his airbox and VAG-COM show good gains, I think it's in "The induction kit war" thread.
 
quick on with respect to the black plastic 'flexi' pipe going into the bottom side of the air box. what is it? think its an 'oil breather pipe'. whats it for? seems strange that it should be sucking in from the unfiltered side of the box. any benifit to these oil breather filters from halfords etc etc...
 
iv read the "induction kit wars" thread loadz of times and always seem to end up none the wiser! dont get me wrong its a good read and lots of help but also lots of opinions which i found confusing
 
The way I look at is you will only get very small gains from any induction kit so why spend loads of money on fancy kit's when you can do this for very little money and it looks like it's ment to be there.
 
Anyone actually know the purpose of the Horn which sits in the top half of the airbox and sits directly in front of the MAF?

Is it worthwhile drilling slightly larger holes in the bottom or doesnt it matter ??? :confused:
 
Would be good if the guys going to the AMD rolling road could do some tests on this to find out for sure, with numbers. Do a RR session in a car with say a OEM smoothed air box and uprated filter, then same car with CAI induction kit then say the OEM set up if possible. This would settle this one once and forever.
If I started again I'd do the smoothed air box and spend money on the handling sooner than I did.

We might not get time to do this on the day but it's something I am thinking about doing ;)
 
This would have to be done on the same car and you'd probley have to leave a week between testing each filter to allow for the ecu to adapt to it. Also if we did them all on the same day the last session will always have less power than the first
