First time i have ever had a car with air con. Its not all the time but just occasionally it has avery bad smell to it. Do i need a new pollen filter or does the whole system need sorting out. I dont really know whats involved. What does having it re-gassed do?

Its still cold. And doesnt always smell does this sound normal?

This is a common problem mate, especially after not using it over the winter. Its caused by bacteria building up in the duct work.

I bought a new pollen filter and a can of comma air-con freshener from halfrauds.smells as fresh as a summer meadow now :)

was it this one, as mine is a bit pongy too

Very common, as mentioned above its due to bacteria build up. Most main dealers now (not just VAG but Volvo, Ford, BMW, Merc etc etc) are now supposed to be recommending an aircon clean every 12 months. We use the same stuff as they do from Wynn's. Great system which vaporises a cleaning liquid and re-circs it around the inside the car and cleans it all up. Costs £29.99+VAT

thats the smell wet dogs lol, where in sheffield you from buddy? Im just in rotherham (well when i go home from uni next week)

will do this when i get five minutes. Ive not long had the car so couldnt tell you how/if it was used in the winter

bacteria doesnt sound good

I live near broomhill mate. Not far out of the city centre.

yes.... need to do mine... changed pollen filter over, old one was black...
(not my fault, only had the motor a month or so)... :D

which is the best air con cleaner to use? Wynn's do one and Comma, i know.

Have to say wasn't overly impressed with the Comma one in my last motor, didn't seem to do much.

if ther pollen filter is not supposed to be black, then i need a new one, mine is black on one side iirc.
how much is a re-gas?mine is warm. :(

ooo. wheres me wallet :D

I may have got your hopes up too much, although i'm sure I've seen a local place doing it for around £30.

I found this, if there's one near you:

"Let Kwik Fit recharge your Air Con while-u-wait for only £44.95. We will replace and recharge lubricant and refrigerant levels in line with your manufacturer’s recommendation. If we cannot improve the coolest vent temperature from your car by more than 10% - then you pay nothing at all.*

* Please note if the ambient temperature around the car is less than 9 degrees Celcius it may affect the results of the AirCon recharge test results. In these circumstances, it is at the managers discretion whether to offer a refund with results less than 10%."

Does this only work on the Aircon? My aircon doesn't smell at all, but if i have the blowers on without the aircon, i get the awful smell coming through :S

after a few text to and from our very own chemical al ;) i went to my local vauxhall dealer. i asked at reception how much, she said speak to service.
and behind the service desk was a big banner"get your air-con serviced here"
ONLY £99.
i made my excuses and left the building.i take it a service is a bit more than just a re-gas?

Mines the same. No problems with aircon on but cat piss smell when you turn it off :( The comma freshener has cured mine nicely though.

Well if the Comma one works for everyone else I'll take myself off to Halfords tomoz and get a can, know they got that one on the shelves. Even though it didn't work too well on my Laguna.

Then need to try and find myself someone decent local to shampoo the seats.

try local car place instead, like A1 motor spares they are half the price of halfrauds....
i used comma but wasnt that impressed with it... worked for abit then the smell came back..
best thing to do that i found is to run the air con for at least 20/30 mins at least once a month....
seems to keep the "cat piss" smell at a minimum

might try 2 cans of the stuff next time....

BUT YOUR CAR WILL GET DAMP

Only got 1 accessory shop local now... the best one went bust.. :(

Have looked on ebay but with postage the Comma one is the same price as Halfords.

But have found the Ixtar one on there, apparently it's the one used by Renault dealers... so will give that a try, about same price as the Comma one.
