Hi guys

I had a flat, went to a tyre place, got a new couple tyres and told the guy to put it on alignment for a check.

I'm attaching a screenshot of the results.

I'm not 100% mechanical so I'm not certain what he said, but he didn't align as there was a need to move the subframe to correct for something (toe, camber, can't remember??) and it was betterif the dealership mechanics did it?

My car is 14 plate, 5000 miles old of which 1000 are mine. Arre the alignment values too off? Is this covered by warranty work?

Thanks a lot

Yes, it was kwik fit. I know they might not be the best but anyhow, I don't think the numbers would be wrong?

They just did the diagnosis and actually recommended me to take it to the dealership given that it still is in warranty.

I live in Edinburgh and only have one seat dealership (where I bought the car). I'm just not sure if all this subframe talk was true and if the dealership is indeed the best place to have it done?

Thanks again

Where ever the wife tells me
I believe Western VW has a good alignment machine. Not 100% sure if Western Seat does, may be worth asking.

I wouldn't trust Kwik Fit. I used to work in a garage with a top notch wireless alignment system, and every time our local KF did any diagnosis or adjustment on a car it was a mile off. They didn't even clamp the steering wheel dead ahead before adjustments.

I personally wouldn't let them check my tyre pressures!

Don't go to a dealer, I was quoted around £200 at a VW dealers once for an alignment! It won't get done under warranty, as they'll just claim it was your driving that knocked it out. This isn't the first post like this either...

I have had SEATs since 1996 and never used the two Edin dealers, I went to Rutherfords of Earlston down the borders as they had far better cust satisfaction scores (using SEAT info) they were 3rd of all the uk SEAT dealers. Now that the family run business has closed, I am using Fife SEAT (they were 7th in last years poll) and recommended to me by my old dealer. Better to travel a bit to get a good dealer than use one just because it,s close.:D

Will do, thanks for the advice.

I've been checking on the web for reviews and a business up north called star gets very good reviews. I also saw another one called autohaus and there's a last one called Lochrie right in Tollcross which is just round the house.

Would you know where I can find the customer satisfaction ratings you mentioned?

Thanks!

My dealer printed them off for me, so unless you ask a dealer that's in the top ten, they prob won't want to show you. I don't know what side of Edin you are from, but just off the Gilmerton Rd, Moredun Pk Rd I think, there is a VAG indie that has been getting good reviews, my mate takes his Golf there.

I'm at Lauriston Place, so very central. Distance isn't much of a prob though as the city is quite small. I'll take a look at the Gilmerton one also. As long as I don't have to leave the city for another one all should be good.

Was there someone sat in the drivers seat when the readings were done ?

Did they put weights in the car as specified by SEAT/VW before the readings were taken ?

Was there 1/2 tank of fuel in as specified by SEAT/VW for the alignment test ?

Hi, thanks for reply

There was no one in the car, I remember the guy got in there to centre and lock the wheel then got off. No weights were put on it.

The tank from memory should have been between half to 25% full as I refilled it a couple days after the diagnostic.

Do you think that accounts for the alignments deviation?

Thanks!

The numbers on that chart would seem to suggest that the drivers side of the car was down.

However - IF the car has been measured correctly - his statement would be correct
moving the subframe would reduce the right camber and increase the left camber.

-0.18 + -1.25 = 1.43 total.

divide by two and you end up with -0.715 per side after moving the subframe.

Doesn't ask for any of that on the hunter system,it says vehicle unladen, full tank of fuel, just checked at work on our new machine.
They get there figures from the manufacturers.
Usually Vauxhall and bmw who suggest weights in cars

Thanks for the clarifications. Still haven't had the opportunity to take it to a vag specialist though.

Wouldn't really have to be a VAG specialist.Any decent bodyshop should have a 4 wheel aligner.
The right rear camber wants sorting first, over a degree out compared with the other side!

These guys are right 5 mins away from me. I'm really thinking of giving them a shout for the sake of convenience.

http://lochrinautos.com/

They seem to have good reviews on the net. They are a multibrand center though. If not I'lll either take it to autohaus or the one Seatstormer recommended on Gilmerton Road.

Thanks!
