Altea XL Timing Belt Change

So my Altea is going to be 4 years old in June. Called into dealer yesterday who confirmed that timing belt is due at 4 years or 80k miles.

Quoted me a price of £380. I asked if this included changing water pump but was told no, that would be extra.

Anyone had their timing belt on a 2.0tdi done and if so , how much was it?
Did you get the water pump done at the same time?

Finally, anyone know of good indies in Glasgow / Lanarkshire to do this?

Humm this is something i am looking at too

Same car AMD down here want 315 all in water pump included

Having had a water pump go on my last VW they have to take the belt off & then recommend a change of belt

Might be worth looking round for a local specialist or try another dealer

Then go back to your local and see if they will do a deal

The altea I bought had a duff turbo I got the trader to agree to pay my local indie here & low and behold he got a discount on the price quoted to me

So fluff em a bit & try it on

Just had mine done at my VW garage. They have a special offer price of £319 for most 4 cylinder engines. Water pump would be an extra £35 I think. I got it done much cheaper than that as the service manager is a mate though. Worth checking other brands to see what they charge. VW gives 2 years parts & labour warranty, remember.

I paid £260 at a non franchised specialist inc water pump!
Some main dealers were up to £420

on a side issue here are the blades on the water pump plastic & if that is the case is it worth changing to a metal bladed one ?

VAG water pumps are a sort of plastic. Metal ones are not VAG parts. Non VAG parts have a years warranty. VAG ones have two years warranty.

It's up to you really.

Am in the process of getting quotes from dealers and indies.

However the best price so far is from the VW dealer, using the VW scheme for 3-10 year old cars, as mentioned above, belt is £319 or £399 to include water pump.

Hopefully will get that price down at some of the indies but I do like the idea of the 2 year warranty from a main VW dealer.......

we're niether "for" or "against" metal impellar water pumps as we've had both fail within the first couple of months after fitting

these days we just use genuine belt kits/waterpumps for the exact reason viking has brought up - 2 year warrenty and the same price tag as a metal impellar one with a 12month warrenty.

Why replace the water pump at all? A VW specialist fobbed me off saying I needed a new water pump, a week later it was still leaking near the pump it was just a loose clip. They charged me £250, I've now learnt how to work on cars myself so I don't get stung again.

Why replace the cam belt at all? Why not just wait til everything fails and fix it when it does?

The only reason for replacing the water pump is because you need to virtually redo the whole cam belt job to do the water pump if it does fail in the future. You don't have to replace the water pump, ever. Unless it fails. But for the cost of just the part when doing the belt, it's good insurance.

Well, just an update, got the timing belt changed today.

Used Deutsch tek in Glasgow, £300 for the Seat branded kit including water pump, pulleys etc.

Hugely impressed with them, their professionalism and customer service were excellent.

Thoroughly recommend them and I will use them again.

How long did they take to do the job? It's about 30miles from me but if they're doing a good job at a good price, it would be worth it. I'd need to find something to keep me busy till it was ready though.

David, yes it is recommended to change timing belt if 4years comes first, if not then mileage. Done mine at 4 year point though only had 36k on the clock.
