They said that about lots of these 4x4 things, when Porsche announced the Porsche cayenne old school porsche owners were pulling out their beards and saying how **** it would be, turned out to be one of their best selling models and was very good, even better with the later models , if a bit ugly to look at, now they are all making then, even Bentley , although that is pig ugly.
Personally if it's priced right and you need that sort of vehicle I think it will do quite well.
For the exact same reason people buy leons instead of golfs

Personally I think these fake SUVs only make sense if you keep it cheap.
It's too soft and fragile to be great off road, too tall and springy to be great on road, and isn't actually any bigger than a hatch if you forget headroom. The boot is over a hundred litres smaller than the Leon ST.
I absolutely see the appeal of the Ateca if you specifically want that crossover look, but if you're going to pay 35k for a sporty car, there are much better choices available in my opinion. It's trying too hard to be too many things.

There are people out there who find the crossover attractive purely because of the height of the seat for getting in and out. Like me.

Ordering people how to think and what they can/cannot say isn't really on. SUVs/crossovers are more likely to kill pedestrians, specifically children, as the impact time isn't spread out by rolling over the bonnet, the impact approximates to instantaneous. Collision avoidance systems aren't foolproof. In that if someone needs a SUV/4x4 for work, for perhaps towing on poor surfaces, if they live somewhere with access issues, or to compensate for physical limitations, then fine, it's an acceptable vehicle to purchase. Preferring them without genuine necessity means the person selecting to drive a vehicle like this is basically advertising their personality to the general public.

I don't need a car that does 155mph and 0-60 in less that 6 seconds but I chose to buy one.

Similarly people are perfectly entitled to buy a SUV if that's what they want and shouldn't be criticised for it.

Also the Alteca actually has a better pedestrian encap score (71%) than the Leon (70%)

Nobody sane knocks people down on purpose, but those with the wit to realise such things aren't 100% avoidable and decides upon an unnecessary vehicle that has that possible pitfall as one of it's lists of drawbacks, coupled with the image issues etc. is making a decision that is self centred. Unless you fit one the categories detailed in my initial post there isn't really any justification for owning a 4x4/suv/crossover. It's principally an image choice, being no more practical than an estate, in fact in this case less practical. That projected image isn't a good one. there are a category of overcompensating folk drawn to such vehicles. I simply pointed out a valid argument as to why they're an inconsiderate choice. There are others. What you have stated is intentionally missing the point.

oh yes, and I'd love a Range Rover Sport SVR , just for the engine note.... but given that it would probably sup unleaded at a far greater rate than the current Cupra, I could no longer afford to pay the butler, so he'd have to go.... but the thought of filling the car up myself
As regards pedestrians, I don't plan on driving on the pavement , so shouldn't hit any as they shouldn't be in the road....
As for Euro N crap, how many vans, trucks & buses are on the road? They all look pretty flat fronted to me, and ask a crash test dummy , would he sooner be hit by a 4 x 4 at 40, or 49 tonnes of Volvo FH12 at the same speed?
